There are modern contributors to the church’s ignorance of the most basic of truths of our faith, namely the hope of resurrection. Today we will examine 3 major mistakes in our theology stemming from the contemporary influence of our culture that have hindered the church’s hope.
3 Mistakes
- We have failed recognize our sin nature
- We have retreated from our function in creation
- We’ve made “going to heaven” the ultimate goal
Psalm 51:5
“Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.”
James 1:14
“But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.”
Romans 3:12
“All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”
Conclusion:
#1 – reframe our hope
#2 – wait means “work”
#3 – wait patiently means “watch”
2 Peter 3:11-14
11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people
ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you
look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will
bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements
will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are
looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of
righteousness. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking
forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless
and at peace with him.
Application:
If the redemption of my body is my hope, what should I do now?
Keep running by the strength of the Holy Spirit
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
