The Power of God’s Grace

Paul’s exposition to the Ephesians reaches the apex of worship as he offers is prayer for the church to experience God’s love through their shared unity from the power of God’s Grace. His understanding is quite clear, humans need outside help to free them from both the everyday struggles towards unity and the eternal enslavement under sin’s curse of death.

For Paul, Jesus Christ is the solution. The power of God’s grace for unity is found in Christ, and the resurrection power to be found on the day of Christ’s return is available in part now for the church. A life lived in response to this grace will result in glory to God, both now and forevermore through eternity.

Ephesians 3:20-21

20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

  • Result vs 17 – “so that” Christ dwelling = rooted and established
  • Purpose vs 18 – “to grasp… the love of Christ”
  • Result vs 19a – “to know love that surpasses knowledge”
  • Purpose vs 19b – “filled” up with the fullness of God

  • Result vs 17 – for unity
  • Purpose vs 18 – to grasp Christ’s love for us
  • Result vs 19a – and therefore know Christ’s surpassing love
  • Purpose vs 19b – for the purpose of our revealing of God completely and fully.

We need God’s power for unity to grasp Christ’s love for us and therefore know Christ’s surpassing love for the purpose of our revealing of God completely and fully.

The Power of God’s Grace

  1. God’s power is evidenced in His love
  2. God’s power in His love is beyond measurement and knowledge
  3. God’s power will take us beyond our limitations
  4. The consequence of God’s power is GLORY TO GOD!
  5. God’s power is active only through His Spirit
  6. God’s power is only for those who believe
  7. God’s power is resurrection power to break the power of sin and death
