The Humility of God’s People

The Humility of God’s People

Because of what God has done for us, we are expected to have a change in our hearts towards one another. However, if we’re honest sometimes it can be very hard. We’re easily annoyed, and misunderstandings and miscommunication clutter the efforts we make towards unity.

The missing ingredient for many of us “humility.” Paul explains to the Philippians that the fullest expression of his successful ministry among them is found in their willingness and follow-through to love one another with the humility and attitude of Jesus Christ.

Observations & Conclusion:
Humility ought to be the posture of…

  1. my Head
Ask: How do I think of myself compared to others?
  2. my Hands
Ask: Do I look out for the needs of my fellow brothers and sister?
  3. my Heart
Ask: How often is my attitude like Jesus or patterned after this world?

Romans 12:3

“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”

Romans 12:6-8

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

Luke 6:32-36

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

Romans 12:4-5

“For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”

Mark 10:45

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Acts 20:35

“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
