The Horses Before the Cart

The Horses Before the Cart

The task of passing our faith on to our children is one that God has designed to flow through the family.  Throughout the scriptures we can observe both God’s unyielding graciousness to reach out to His children and His children’s continual need to learn the hard way.

Ultimately, if we are going to follow God’s mechanism for discipleship we must first focus our attention on the primary relationship between husbands and wives.

Deuteronomy 22:10

“Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.”

Observations & Conclusions:

1. Godliness at home begins when mom and dad both seek the Word of the Lord.

2. God has ordained that you find your fulfillment in your spouse not your children.

3. Godliness in children beings with unity in the marriage – disunity leads to deception

4. Your children will suck the love and life out of your marriage.

5. If you care about your children don’t put them first – put your spouse first.

Application:

  • Question #1 – Prayer – Are you both seeking God?
  • Question #2 – Where are you finding fulfillment?
  • Question #3 – What changes need to be made to pursue unity?

Hebrews 12:15-17

See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. Even though he sought the blessing with tears, he could not change what he had done.

Proverbs 5:18-19

“May your fountain be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
A loving doe, a graceful deer—
may her breasts satisfy you always,
may you ever be intoxicated with her love.”

Song of Songs 3:1-4

“All night long on my bed, I looked for the one my heart loves; I looked for him but did not find him. I will get up now and go about the city, through its streets and squares; I will search for the one my heart loves. So I looked for him but did not find him. The watchmen found me as they made their rounds in the city. “Have you seen the one my heart loves?” Scarcely had I passed them when I found the one my heart loves. I held him and would not let him go till I had brought him to my mother’s house, to the room of the one who conceived me.”

1 Corinthians 7:32-34

“I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband.”

1 Peter 3:7

“Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.”
