Symphonic Evangelism – Discipleship as Evangelism

Symphonic Evangelism – Discipleship as Evangelism

The whole goal behind evangelism is discipleship. And evangelism that fails to move towards making disciples is only making converts.  But what is a disciple, and what does it mean to truly “follow” Jesus?

Observations & Conclusions:

  1. To follow Jesus means, to leave your old life behind
  2. To follow Jesus means, a complete trust in Jesus
  3. To follow Jesus means, to change what you treasure
  4. To follow Jesus means, dismissing convenience
  5. To follow Jesus means, to have your life repurposed
  6. To follow Jesus means, to be given a second chance

Application:

  1. Stop – Repent: To intentionally turn away from a pattern of sinful living
  2. Drop – Confess: To honestly, fully, and biblically call sin what God says it is
  3. Roll with JesusFollow – Become a Disciple: To seek God’s direction, will, mind, and purpose in your life and in-so-doing desire to worship and glorify Him

Revelation 17:14

“They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.”

Matthew 19:16-24

“Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life? “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments. “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’ “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.”

Luke 9:57-62

“As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

John 21:15-19

“When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.  Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

Luke 5:8

“When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”
