Simply Jesus – Our Christmas Treasure

Jesus as the Messiah is a treasure worth searching for.  The story of Jesus’ 1st Jerusalem visit is met with a prophetic pronouncement of God’s sovereign provision for a light to the Gentiles.  This One prophesied as a branch from Jesse will be a banner for all peoples. 

Observations:

Mary and Joseph are in Jerusalem for 4 reasons: 

1. to circumcise Jesus 
2. to officially record his name as “Jesus”
3. to present Jesus to God as their firstborn
4. and for purification after birth

Simeon 

1. Simeon was waiting for the “consolation of Israel” or Messiah 
2. Simeon was led by the Holy Spirit
3. Simeon declared Jesus as revelation to the Gentiles
4. Simeon treasured Jesus

Anna

1. Anna was devoted to the Lord – no distractions 
2. Anna responded to the truth of Jesus as Messiah
3. Anna declared Jesus as the redemption of Jerusalem
4. Anna treasured Jesus

Conclusions: 

1. The truth of Jesus will reveal the thoughts of your heart
2. If you’re looking for Jesus – you will be led to find Jesus
