There are some certainties when it comes to the nature of mission work in a fallen world. Jesus gives his disciples a required strategy for their success as they are sent out like sheep among wolves.
Observations:
- To advance the kingdom of God is to threaten the kingdom of man
- Authority, ability, and confidence come from God alone
Conclusions: To be sent after the will of God means…
- Expect opposition
- Success requires dependence on God – God is in control
Application:
- Make the most of every opportunity
– as shrewd as snakes - Make good choices
– as innocent as doves - Do not give in to fear
Ephesians 5:15-16
“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”
1 Corinthians 14:20
“Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.”
Ephesians 5:17-18
“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”
