Luke: Live by Faith

Faith is a difficult thing to practice today. For many reasons we’ve crafted around us a world that minimizes the need for genuine faith. Insurance companies, investments, accessibility of modern conveniences, even the lack of expectations in church: from our jobs to our devotional life, very few of us are challenged towards defining actions of faith.

Our passage today from Luke 5 is a picture of the exact opposite. Jesus not only heals a man who reveals faith in Him, but He uses the opportunity to reveal to the crowd the full extent of what the implications of His ministry would mean for their “way of doing things.” We are therefore offered two very stark opportunities as to what “faith in Jesus” looks like.

Hebrews 10:33-39

“So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. 36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. 37 For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.” 38 And, “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” 39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.”

Conclusion:
1. Jesus is God
2. Faith is found in who Jesus is, not what He can do for you
3. The root of our problem is sin
4. Act NOW
5. Forgiveness of sins is the hardest

Application:
Where do you look for help?
Have you addressed the root of your troubles?
What are you willing to risk to bring someone to Jesus?
What are you waiting for?

For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.”
– Hebrews 10:37
