The picture of Jesus that we find in the scriptures gives us the truth about a God who has displayed His love to His creation. However, we must be careful that the picture we get is the correct picture of Jesus. This series will seek to examine the “portraits” of Jesus as found through the study of Typology; the Old Testament symbols that point to the corresponding New Testament truths of redemption.
We begin at the beginning. The drama of Genesis chapter 3 underscores many of the themes that will eventually be made explicit in the Old Testament sacrificial system, and will ultimately find their fulfillment in the person of Jesus Christ.
The Savior from Sin
- Messiah will be a man from the seed of the woman
- Messiah will suffer
- Messiah will conquer
The Consequence of Sin
- Shame, guilt, separation, and death are the consequences
- Sin must be covered = “atonement”
- The covering comes from another who is innocent = “substitution”
- A acceptable covering involves shedding blood
- God does all the work, freely as an act of pure grace
Conclusions:
1. Sin has consequences of judgment
2. You can’t be right with God unless you have a sufficient substitutionary atoning sacrifice for your sins
3. Jesus can be your Savior
Application:
Do you have the right picture of Jesus?
WITH THE WRONG PICTURE OF JESUS YOU AND I WILL REMAKE JESUS IN OUR OWN IMAGE
Luke 24:27
“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”
1 Peter 1:10-12
“Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.”
John 5:39
“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me”
Acts 10:43
“All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
John 1:29
“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
2 Corinthians 5:21
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Hebrews 9:12
“He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.”
