Discipleship: Knowing Him

Discipleship: Knowing Him

The Lord’s prayer is often mis-titled as the prayer that Jesus taught His disciples to pray from Luke 11.  However, Jesus’ personal prayer is found in John 17, and it contains a treasure of spiritual truths; none more greater than the identification of the source of eternal life.

Christians today would do well to examine how we have traditionally conceived of heaven and everlasting life.  We would benefit from adjusting our understanding by hearing directly from Jesus the answer and the timing for experiencing life to the fullest.

Observations:

1. Jesus prepares for the cross by focusing on the glory of God

2. Jesus has authority over all people

3. Jesus gives “eternal life

4. Jesus brings glory to the Father by completing His work

5. Jesus focuses on being in the presence of the Father

Conclusion:

1. Eternal life is knowing Jesus

2. Transformation comes from knowing Jesus

3. The disciple who believes in Jesus, knows Jesus

Application:

Eternal Life is not someday – it starts NOW!

  • How is your relationship with Jesus?
  • How has knowing Jesus transformed your life?
  • What are you focusing on?  Going to heaven, or being with Jesus?
  • Who are you seeking to bring glory to with your life’s work?
  • Who has the authority over your life?  You or Jesus?

John 20:31

“But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

1 John 5:13

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”

1 John 5:20

“We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.”

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Matthew 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’
