Unfortunately, in our world today there is more than enough fodder for division: sports teams, political parties, educational systems, and the list goes on and on. In the church, however, Jesus prayed that His followers would be one!
We examine Paul’s appeal to the church in Philippi for their unity and fusion under their calling in Christ. We will see that our perspective of Jesus is a foundational point to our unity in the church.
Observations:
- Our unity as a church begins with Jesus
- Our unity as a church is a reflection of God’s love for us
- Our purpose as a church is selfless service expressed through humility
A. Encouragement from Unity with Christ
↳Being like-minded
B. Comfort from Christ’s Love
↳Having the Same Love
C. Fellowship with the Spirit
↳One in Spirit
D. Tenderness and Compassion
↳One in Purpose (harmony of one mind)
- Don’t be selfish or vain
- Consider others as better
- Don’t look only to your interests
- Look to the interests of others
Conclusion:
1. Give what has been given to you
2. Our unity is evidence of our shared faith
3. Our purpose, in the church, is rooted in compassion
4. Division is a product of taking our eyes off Christ
