Helping Hearts Christmas Caroling at ICMCF https://www.gracesagola.com/2024/12/07/helping-hearts-christmas-caroling-at-icmcf/ Sat, 07 Dec 2024 15:30:13 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=12316 This was probably one of the bigger outings for the Hearts of Grace this year and it was one of the most rewarding!  It took a lot of church family to put together the ornaments that were given to the residents.  Our Santa was amazing, and our guitarist was a sprite young elf, and the carolers that participated showed God’s love and His light.  So amazing were the Christmas carols that so brightly lifted the spirits of the residents at ICMCF.

There were many warm smiles on everyone’s faces and the joy of celebrating Jesus filled the air!  Oh what at beautiful night!  I believe you could hear the angels sing “Jesus Christ is King!”  It is so rewarding to worship and serve Him!

It all came together and everything is ready to go for December. Thank you to the families that came out to help! All glory to His name! I was truly wonderful to see how adept the children were in putting those tiny pieces of Legos together. We could not have finished in such a timely manner without them!

Missionary & Pastor Sreeraj https://www.gracesagola.com/2024/10/13/missionary-pastor-sreeraj/ Sun, 13 Oct 2024 19:52:37 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=12187 This Sunday we were blessed to have one of our missionaries, Pastor Sreeraj Niak Bukya, visiting again from his ministry travels and work in India.  Many of our North Dickinson churches have partnered with Agape Outreach Mission to support Pastor Sreeraj.

He brought us some exciting updates about his own daughter’s calling into ministry, new churches planted in the north, and the work of baptizing and building new church facilities.  We were also thankful for his message of hope and encouragement in Jesus Christ alone.

After praying for our brother Sree, we sent him off again to more meetings this upcoming week, and soon to return back to India for those long trips to teach, strengthen and encourage the saints.

We also enjoyed hearing of the many hunting adventures and stories that accompanied the delicious meal.  As always, we continue to extend this event as an invitation for fathers to engage with their sons for maturity in prayer and discipleship.  Special thanks to Tom Gursky and Seth Wixstrom for their leadership (and contribution of venison!).

We are grateful to the township for the utilization of the community center pavilion, and also a heartfelt thank you to all those who served both with the dinner and volunteering for all the games and prizes for our kids and families.

We were also blessed to have the use of Lake Ellen for a majority of those baptisms (even though it was only 60 degrees that day!) with only a couple indoor baptisms following up on the next Sunday. Each individual was given the chance to give a witness of their desire to have the church join with them in their faith journey. It is our joy and privilege to welcome them into the visible family of God here at Grace.

The lessons all focused around developing our children’s understanding and application of using the Armor of God in their walk of faith. We were also blessed to have children from the community and neighboring churches participate with ours for a more enriching experience of learning and fun.

Special thanks to the Applekamps and all those volunteers who worked in lesson teaching, arts and crafts, and snacks!

Mexico – Summer Missions Trip https://www.gracesagola.com/2024/06/23/mexico-summer-missions-trip/ Sun, 23 Jun 2024 15:25:44 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=11917 This being our church’s first trip to this location in Mexico there were a lot of unknowns. It funny how your imagination can run wild with hypotheticals in the absence of experience, and perhaps the greatest test was if the team was going to even get on the airplane at all! However, everyone from Grace who signed up followed the Lord’s leading by faith, and at every turn, those imaginary fears were laid to rest.

We were able to host VBS time with the children from the village and run some softball and soccer camps. The construction work involved completing the next stage of work on the mission housing, which all got completed. And one of the biggest take-aways from this trip was seeing in action the unique gifting of the Spirit present in every member’s contribution to the service week.

Everyone had a role to play and everyone benefited from the mutual service of the whole. Special thanks to Luz, our resident Spanish speaker, without you we might not have made it through immigration!

From the waiting in the airport to the ministry & construction work – God tested us and then showed us His provision again and again.

We end up finishing 2 classroom roofs, and while the weather channel was predicting rain the whole week, the Lord didn’t let it rain until just 5 minutes after we were finished. We had a beautiful group of children every day for VBS, and just when we ran short on help, the Training Center interns stepped up and carried what we could not.

Throughout the whole trip we were stretched and grown and in the end grown closer together through our service week. Thank you to all who helped make this mission trip possible.

Only next year we’ll need someone to tell the fish to show up too! Despite having an abundance of lines in the water, it was slim pickings for keepers.

Nevertheless less a couple of trophies emerged – and more than that, we had a wonderful time with our church family. Thank you to all who came up to participate and bring the kids as we enjoyed good food, fellowship, and fishing in God’s great outdoors.

International Culinary Cuisine Fundraiser Dinner https://www.gracesagola.com/2024/03/09/international-culinary-cuisine-fundraiser-dinner/ Sat, 09 Mar 2024 14:37:49 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=11474 Our Mission fundraiser dinner was as huge a success as it was ambitious. With the expertise from our cuisine chef Debbie Gursky, we served a 5 course meal where each course was a food native to the country we are supporting.

Each course had a 5 minute introduction and prayer video for each country that introduced the unique dish, and then guests got to experience the specific food from each country while they were entertained with music native to each location.

All of our youth who are going on the mission trips got trained in food-service etiquette and they waited on each of the tables by serving and clearing items with courtesy and hospitality. The guests were encouraged to “tip” their waiters, and all together our youth were tipped almost $750!

Thanks to all those who spent weeks preparing, who arrived early to set up and stayed late for clean up. Special thanks to Dawn and Terry McDonald for offering childcare at the church, and to all those who served in the kitchen, even if they’re not getting on the airplane with the rest of the team.

Confirmation https://www.gracesagola.com/2024/01/07/confirmation/ Sun, 07 Jan 2024 17:23:26 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=11312 For the past 18 months our confirmation students (made up of our church’s middle schoolers), have been meeting together with their parents to study the background, structure, and content of the scriptures.  In addition to their coursework, each student has to memorize the Apostles’ Creed, the 10 Commandments, and the Lord’s Prayer.  Finally, each student was challenged to search the Word and discover a unique and meaningful verse that they would “adopt” as their own to memorize and carry with them as a “Life Verse”.

This past Sunday was their Confirmation Graduation, and along with presenting their memory verses, all of the students led the entire service from beginning to end.  At Grace, we treat confirmation as that maker by which our young people are welcomed into participation with the rest of God’s church to become full contributors to the multifaceted expression of the gifts of the Spirit to edify the body of believers.  We are so thankful for their hard work and commitment to live as Christians in an increasingly Christ-less world.

What a wonderful way to kickoff the New Year!  Congratulations to each of them:

It was a great afternoon to bring Christmas song and gifts to the residents at Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls.  Many people in skilled nursing facilities are unable to get out and visit family and friends for the holidays, so we brought the family of Christ to them!  Many were especially fond of the youth that came with us.  I believe there is a bit of nostalgia, with the residents, in seeing the youth and remembering their youth.  Many smiles of joy, sounds of laughter and Christmas carols filled the halls!  Our hearts were truly blessed to be able to warm the hearts of the residents in Crystal Falls!  Thankful to everyone that came out for this special holiday visit.  Praising God for His gift of Jesus!

Special thanks to all those who came early to set up and stayed late to clean up – along with all those who brought their kids and families to participate in our Fall kickoff event!  Finally, special thanks to the hard working volunteers who spent countless hour preparing a fun and safe place for our children to play – we are so blessed to live, work, and serve where we do!

Benefit Concert https://www.gracesagola.com/2023/09/09/benefit-concert/ Sun, 10 Sep 2023 01:24:29 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=11013 Our church has felt the pain of some unexpected and recent losses.  In rallying as a family, we’ve had opportunity to help raise funds for one of our families in their grief by hosting a Bake-sale Benefit and concert with Sowing Seeds.  With only about one-week’s warning and advertising we were able to fill 4 tables with baked goods, artisan crafts, and donations that far exceeded anything of our other bake-sale fundraisers.

What a blessing to have the participation of the community around this family and our church along with members from our neighboring churches to show love and generosity during these difficult times.  Thanks to our God for His provision and family.  Special thanks to everyone who participated, prayed, auctioned, gave, set up and tore down, sang, and served to make this Bake Sale Benefit a success.

Visits to Iron County Medical Care Facility and Victorian Heights https://www.gracesagola.com/2023/08/19/visits-to-iron-county-medical-care-facility-and-victorian-heights/ Sat, 19 Aug 2023 21:39:11 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=10969 This past summer some of us were able to visit the residents at ICMCF in Crystal Falls and we have had some wonderful visits getting to know some new faces, and catching up with some of the people from past visits.  If you were not able to make the visit in July you missed Tom Gursky as he serenaded the residents with songs from their past.  There will be more visits to area assisted living facilities.  Please come join us on one of our future visits.  Thank you to all who have come along to make someones day a little brighter!

We have also had the pleasure of visiting Virginia at Victorian Heights.  Virginia is part of our behind-the-scenes Helping Heart as she diligently writes cards to many of the people on our prayer list.  Thank you, Virginia for all those you touch through your card ministry!

Helping Hearts Summer Salads https://www.gracesagola.com/2023/08/18/helping-hearts-summer-salads/ Fri, 18 Aug 2023 21:37:58 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=10963 This was our first summer season for reaching out with salads.  I believe the Helping Hearts Summer Salads were a wonderful addition to our ministry experience in that we were doing something “different” and gathering to build each other up, including those we delivered to.  Also, in purchasing the salad items; everything had to be fresh and in good shape to serve.  Lettuce doesn’t last long in hot weather.  Makes me think of how we need to keep our relationship with Jesus, fresh, and in good shape.  All three months brought different salads and different helpers, and different people to lift up and give a little love, all to God’s glory! Thankful for all those who came to help!  Thankful for God’s faithfulness!  Looking forward to the next season coming up, Soup!

Along with the yummy food and fund and games for the kiddos, we had a great reminder from Chris Kuzak about the simplicity and essentiality of the Gospel. What a blessing to hear from so many of our folks about their experiences in sharing the message of the good new of Jesus Christ. Baptism Sunday https://www.gracesagola.com/2023/08/06/baptism-sunday/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 14:35:14 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=10875 We had a beautiful celebration of baptism with 10 individuals both committing and recommitting their lives to following our Lord. Their testimonies were filled with the joy of desiring to look more like Christ, joining our church family, and seizing any and all opportunities to display the heart of a true disciple. Some testimonies also included the difficult journey to faith, whereby today’s baptism can serve as an inflection point in their walk with our Lord and reminder that they have been clothed with Christ. We thank the Lord for our church family’s love and support for these receipts of baptism, we thank the Lord for the beautiful weather that He provided, and we thank the Lord for the work and movement of His Spirit that draws us into deeper fellowship and obedience to His will as members of His family.

Galatians 3:26-27

“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”

North Dickinson Church’s Summer Softball “Slugfest” Tournament https://www.gracesagola.com/2023/07/22/north-dickinson-churchs-summer-softball-slugfest-tournament/ Sat, 22 Jul 2023 16:46:49 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=10850 What happens when you get 5 churches together for a softball tournament?  Well, that’s what we were going to find out.  Each year, our local North Dickinson churches gather together for a rotating Good Friday service, but that’s about all we do together.  We thought it would be fun to put together a softball tournament that would be for all ages, and spend a beautiful summer Saturday together enjoying some food, fellowship, and fun in the name of our Lord Jesus.

Special thanks to all the volunteers who cooked brats and burgers, those who helped put up the shade tents, and the organization of all the kids games and prizes.  Although each team put forth a worth effort in good spirited competition, the trophy can only go to one team.  Congratulations to Zion Lutheran and coach Grunlund for winning the “Slugfest” traveling trophy.  We will see out on the field next year!

Finally, as with every year’s Fish Fry we announced the winners of our June Fishing Derby.  Congratulations to:

  1. 1st place – Maggie Adams and Zeke Holsworth
  2. 2nd place – Ezra Holsworth
  3. 3rd place – Brooks Nygard

The weather was supreme and the fellowship was better. Although the fishing was slow, the kids grinded it out and managed to put some fish on the board. This year was a thriller. Zeke Holsworth landed a whopper bluegill and when the clock struck noon – Zeke led the pack. But after the crowd had left our very own Maggie Adams was not ready to give up. She pulled in a lunker largemouth bass and did it on a fly rod!! After consulting Zeke, he agreed that Maggie was worthy of the 1st place prize. So this year we will have Co-champions.

  • 1st place – Maggie Adams and Zeke Holsworth
  • 2nd place – Ezra Holsworth
  • 3rd place – Brooks Nygard
  • “The One That Got Away Award” Landon
  • “Swimmers Itch Award” Eli Adams

We were able to deliver to each resident’s door and had the opportunity to talk to most of the residents who were enjoying lunch when we got there.  While our photos reflect only 5 persons “helping,” there were others, who were unable to attend, that made the flowers.  Our fellowship was full of laughter and fun, and the weather perfect!  Another praise to our Lord!

Each year we look forward to the celebration of Easter. The resurrection is our central hope as followers of Jesus, so this Sunday always looks a little unique compared to our regular services. We spend the whole morning together as families in worship, and structure our service around integrating all ages in celebration of the empty grave.

Special thanks to all our volunteers who helped add the special music selections to the service: for the many musicians who played and our chime choir for blessing us with their performance. Also a great big thank you to Debbie and all her helpers for the yummy brunch during our fellowship hour. Even though each Sunday is another mini-Easter, we know that Resurrection Sunday is extra special – until next year – He is Risen indeed!

This year we celebrated the service at Zion Lutheran. Along with the beautiful music selections one of the most impactful components of their service was their youth group’s dramatization of confession of sins. We worked from morning until night everyday of the break, and it was exhausting, but also refreshing!  It was like a missions trip to our own church!  We had several people who helped throughout the week too, and I’m so thankful for all of them! The church looks great, and it was fun to celebrate Easter on Sunday in our newly remodeled church!

Our theme was God’s Faithfulness in the Seasons of a Woman’s Life. We had a speaker, praise music, a prayer room, and fun activities planned throughout the day, all of which were great!

The greatest thing was watching all of the women fellowshipping and getting to know one another! God definitely showed up in great ways through the day and leading up to it!

Our theme this year was “Jesus is our bright and shining star” and we talked about Idols and what things ‘run’ our lives we also learned how we need to make God#1 and how even on our bad days he is there. We talked about ways we can make God a priority.

We played a lot of laser tag, thanks to Nick and CoryAnn Hulce. We played minute to win it games, and had a dance contest with Sam and Landon showing us their moves. We are so blessed! What a great night!

Our purpose each year is to gather as servants of our Lord to pray together for God’s blessing, direction, and equipping as those serving single-mindedly through the Spirit’s leading.

Our 2023 theme is focusing on the integration of King Jesus into all spheres of life: beginning with our own personal discipleship, onto marriages and families, to our community and world.

We also brainstormed with a variety of united ministries to think through how the gospel would impact those around us: from the committed Christian through the wayward and lost. We are so grateful to all our ministry leaders for giving their time and effort for this very important meeting, with special thanks to Debbie Gursky for catering our gathering and once more going above and beyond to be a blessing to our church family!

During the week, kids were reminded that they each have gifts given to them by the Creator who designed them for His glory. At the end of each day, one of the youth missionaries shared the lessons they learned serving God, and then the VBS participants were encouraged to share their talents. Evangelism Pig Roast https://www.gracesagola.com/2022/06/26/evangelism-pig-roast/ Sun, 26 Jun 2022 13:48:59 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=9569 In a 2 year long endeavor to invite our neighbors to church, today was the culmination of those efforts. We believe that the very best place for believers to grow in Christ is in a local church, where they are taught God’s Word, and have opportunity to serve and exercise their gifts for the edification of the body. But sometimes it’s hard to offer that invitation. That’s why we decided that a more attainable invitation to help get the ball rolling would be to host a summer Pig Roast immediately following Sunday Morning Worship and see if we might be able to bless our community and encourage some new believers to come back and find out more about what it means to be part of a church family.

Special thanks to the Kennards for their hard work and preparation for the Pig Roast, and all of our other volunteers who helped serve. Also to Sowing Seeds for the live music and concert after the service.

Today’s Men’s Prayer Breakfast, has changed into our Men’s Steak and Prayer Cookout!

Special thanks to all the guys (and even some new ones) who came out to pray together and share. And also a great big thank you to Dan especially for providing the main course!

Grace to the Dominican Republic – 2022 Missions Trip https://www.gracesagola.com/2022/06/18/grace-to-the-dominican-republic-2022-missions-trip/ Sat, 18 Jun 2022 13:42:35 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=9492 It was a year in the planning, and through much prayer and God’s provision and graciousness our entire team from Grace made it to the Dominican Republic and back having both invested our lives in the work and ministry at Freedom International, and having our own lives changed forever!

The work at Freedom consisted mainly of 3 areas (1) Construction on the campus, (2) English Tutoring, & (3) Running Vacation Bible Schools [a bible lesson, songs, crafts, and games] in the small villages that they call Batays. Each day our team would split up into the preferred activities and maximize the time we had to serve in our various capacities.

The trip had its challenges, but through the prayers of our church back home and all our supporters, God changed every challenge into something beautiful for His glory. Perhaps the most obvious lasting result from the trip was that 21 signed up to go a year ago and 21 went. This team has continued to pray for each other and serve each other long after the plane landed in the US.

There is so much more that could be said about this trip. This was our church’s very first international missions experience and each and every person came back to Sagola having their eyes more opened to God’s love that transcends national and cultural boundaries. We look forward to seeds planted for future trips and continuing to live off the fruit that was grow on this one! Thank you to all those who helped raise the funds and pray for us for this week of service.

Fishing in the rain can be fun, as we all found to our delight, and sometimes the fish bite better than in the sunshine. The kids were great sports, and just about everyone caught something, except Donna Cline, who got the “skunk award”. Soggy hot dogs and brats added to the festive atmosphere, and we left feeling like the most intrepid anglers anywhere, and can’t wait to do it again next year!

Evangelism Training – Conversations: A Simple Approach to Sharing the Gospel https://www.gracesagola.com/2022/06/08/evangelism-training-conversations-a-simple-approach-to-sharing-the-gospel/ Wed, 08 Jun 2022 13:38:33 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=9463 Our emphasis on evangelism was just given another great boost by having the Gideons come and give a 3 part presentation on an effective methodology for sharing the gospel. They did a great job of summarizing and outlining the gospel presentation, and one of the best insights was a series of penetrating questions that are designed to get the non-Christian thinking about their stance on God. Such as, “Do you go to a church?” “What are your thoughts about the person Jesus Christ.” And, “Would you want to know if you were incorrect on some of your convictions?”

Perhaps the best part of the 3 hour training was the breakout sessions where we got to role-play a series of non-Christian characters and attempt to use the conversation method for sharing Christ. The evening was equipping enriching and fun. Thanks to our local Gideons for reaching out and providing this excellent resource to help our folks become further engaged and confident in evangelism.

Helping Hearts Flowers of Faith https://www.gracesagola.com/2022/05/14/helping-hearts-flowers-of-faith/ Sat, 14 May 2022 14:02:15 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=9380 Flowers of Faith was one of the most rewarding Helping Hearts events we have hosted! God was with us right from the beginning, giving us a perfectly beautiful day to be outside!  We scooped soil and planted flowers and enjoyed working as a family.  Each planter had beautiful flowers, and baubles, along with a message of welcome and love from our Sagola church.

Our wagons were filled with 22 beautiful planters as we headed into the community of Sagola.  We had such a wonderful time going to each door and offering a beautiful gift of love.  We were also able to meet some of our neighbors!   I was especially please to see our youth so involved and willing to help!  I am always amazed at our God for His continued provisions and love.

A special thank you to all who came out and participated in this wonderful event. This was such a picture perfect, super fun day, and now, every resident in the town of Sagola knows who we are!  It only takes a spark!  God is so good!

We had a nice turnout with many of our children’s volunteers sharing and practicing the simple steps of the gospel. The fundamental idea behind the program is that if you are able to share the good news of Jesus Christ with a child, then you can share the gospel with anyone.

To that end, the DR Mission Team had the opportunity this past Saturday to help with the spring cleaning of a local camp.

It’s always amazing what speed the chores get checked off when you have eager helpers. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work.” Special thanks to everyone on the team who was able to come out and serve.

Whereas once you had to look to find the rebellion of those who live contrary to the rule and design of God, now those headlines are in our face all the time. But we know the One in whom we have believed!

This NDOP was one of our best attended, and we are so thankful to everyone who gave up an hour of their afternoon to humbly bow and pray for repentance, blessing, protection, and peace across all the various government agencies and across all spectrums and ages within our community and nation.

“Mother, Daughter, Sister, Friend Tea” https://www.gracesagola.com/2022/04/30/mother-daughter-sister-friend-tea/ Sat, 30 Apr 2022 17:59:04 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=9313 It was a gloomy, rainy day outside but it felt like spring inside on April 30, as the ladies of Grace and their guests gathered for our 2nd annual “Mother, Daughter, Sister, Friend Tea”. Tables were decorated with individual themes ranging from “Warriors of Christ” to Unicorns and several in between, with a Birthday Party themed table thrown in for good measure. Several ladies shared memories of important women in their lives, and delicious tea cakes and other goodies were enjoyed by all in attendance (especially the little ladies).

A centerpiece of the dessert table was a “croquembouche” created by Sarah Adams. Cream puffs and meringues piled high with caramel as glue, then completely encircled by spun caramel…truly a sight to behold!  If one were to get philosophical, one could compare the caramel to the sweet memories and friendships “gluing” us together and encircling our lives, or we could simply say that we had “sweet” fellowship.

In effort to reach the most needed demographic in the modern church, many churches find themselves out of touch with the biblical model for discipleship within the home and therefore are also under equipped to meet the needs of today’s youth.  The Hulces are excited to come alongside any local church to help encourage and shape lasting youth in-reach which is directed honoring God in its design and execution.

We are privileged to commission them, support them, and partner together with them in this work.  We look forward with optimism and joy for God’s blessings for these our new local missionaries.

Our theme was Wii love Jesus and our lessons were wii serve, wii worship, wii pray, wii teach, and wii love.
What a wonderful night.

I’m probably over tired and a tad bit emotional but when I reflect on the night I am so proud of our youth group. If anyone feels their spirit and faith sort of slipping, 1 conversation with any one of our kids will ease their hearts. I can not say enough about the conversations we have. The best indicator of the pizza quality was found in a record number of new pizza sales for the fund raiser. Part of their graduation involved sharing with the congregation their “Life Verses” – passages from God’s Word that they feel speak in a special way into their lives.

In addition to those verses, the students had to memorize the Apostles’ Creed, the 10 Commandments and the Lord’s Prayer. Finally, each of them took part in helping to lead our Sunday morning Worship Service.

The real “graduation” of confirmation is a community recognition of these young people to come alongside the rest of us and mutual worshippers of God and servants to the body of Christ. We are so proud of each of them, and thank God for their profession of faith in Jesus and participation in the cooperate worship of the community of believers.

The play was a conversation between all the festive decorations at Christmas time: the star on the tree, the ornaments, the stockings, etc.  As each one was convinced they were the centerpiece of Christmas, it was the angel story that reminded them of the true meaning of Christmas.

Special thanks to Angela and all her helpers as well as the parents who encouraged their kids, and especially all our young ones for their part in our remembering and celebrating the birth of Jesus as the true reason for Christmas!

Bazaar Auction https://www.gracesagola.com/2021/09/12/bazaar-auction/ Sun, 12 Sep 2021 19:55:38 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=8447 One of the most fun ways we get to raise support for a variety of needs is through our church auctions.  Very often we simply have a “bake sale” fundraiser, but we thought it might be more fun to expand the auction to a variety of crafts, goods, and foods.  So, instead of just cinnamon rolls and pies, we invited the church to participate in any way they creatively could.

This summer we decided to dedicate a Sunday for raising support for our children’s camp replacement Ark Trip.  However, by the time we reached the fundraiser date in September, we had already had recouped our initial investment.  What to do with this already scheduled “Bazaar Auction” then?  We decided that our upcoming Missions Team could use the support to get their fundraising off to a good start.

Unbelievably, we reached new records for support as our little Sagola church so generously participated by both bidding and contributing to the auction.  After this Sunday the mission team will have 15% of their required funds in the bank.  Much thanks to the whole church, and everyone who gave so generously!

Ark Trip https://www.gracesagola.com/2021/08/12/ark-trip/ Thu, 12 Aug 2021 21:23:45 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=8280 With our summer plans augmented because of the closing of Lake Ellen Bible Camp, our church family has decided to send our campers (with their parents) to Kentucky to see the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum.  But a 12 hour bus ride with 30 kids is no easy task – at least you wouldn’t think it would be.

We had the most amazing time with our youth on all three days of this trip!  Not only were the bus rides filled with fun: including crafts, movies, time with friends, and plenty of pit stops, but we were also blessed to have Nick and CoryAnn Hulce along with their kids join us for the tour.  Nick is a ninja-master at corralling young people and engaging them with lessons from God’s Word using games, object lessons, and illustrations that make understanding the core of the gospel easy for everyone.  We were so thankful for his enthusiasm and care for our Grace kids with a morning devotional each day and loving oversight at just the right moments on the trip.

As I watched families walking through the exhibits together and seeing parents and grandparents pointing out the wonders of God’s creation, I couldn’t help but thank God for this experience of an eternal investment in our children’s lives.  Along with the wonder of God’s power and glory, we had lots of fun in the zoo and playground parts of the parks too.

Special thanks to Nick and CoryAnn for all their leadership.  A great big thank you to all the parents and extra eyes and ears with our chaperones and guardians on this trip.  And finally, thanks to Nicole Kuzak for all her time in vision and preparation for making this trip a reality.

Back-to-School Night and Ice Cream https://www.gracesagola.com/2021/08/08/back-to-school-night-and-ice-cream/ Sun, 08 Aug 2021 21:20:55 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=8268 It is a privilege for us to offering free back-to-school supplies for our kids and the families within our community each year.  This year’s back-to-school night began with an overview of the highlights from VBS and a special prayer for all our kids and the staff and teachers for each school.

Special thanks as always to Bob and CJ for their donation of ice cream, and thanks to all the helpers who made sure each of the kids got everything they needed from their list.  We were able to make some left over back-to-school packets, so if you couldn’t make it, please see Emily to receive your items.

Special thanks to Patty Carpenter and all her helpers for putting together the meal following the service and also thanks to all those bikers who joined us – you’re welcome to come and join us again anytime!

VBS https://www.gracesagola.com/2021/08/06/vbs/ Fri, 06 Aug 2021 21:08:23 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=8215 As has been our theme this summer, our Vacation Bible School numbers were back up to our pre-Covid attendance and each day we saw new kids join us for the Bible Lessons, games, snacks and songs.  At last count we had 54 kids with almost a dozen who came for the first time every!

This year’s VBS was destination dig, and with Angie’s creativity it has been an awesome experience for teaching our children how to see Jesus in the Old Testament and learn how to “dig” to recognize the prophecies and truths about the Son of God as they’ve been scattered and hidden and just waiting to be discovered.

One of the most encouraging parts of this year’s VBS was all the new workers and volunteers who have stepped up and helped in so many ways.  From the set designs, to teaching from God’s Word, to the snack and crafts — we are so blessed to have such a diversity of helpers to love on our kids thereby lead by example in displaying the love of God.

A HUGE thank you to all our volunteers and everyone who served behind the scenes.  We couldn’t have done it without you!

Happy Annual Church Picnic https://www.gracesagola.com/2021/08/01/happy-annual-church-picnic/ Mon, 02 Aug 2021 01:35:43 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=8166 Well, 2021 has been a long haul of seeking to return to a functional fellowship and one of our most beloved opportunities for gathering comes at our annual Church Picnic.  This year felt like we are starting to return back to normal.  We had singing and prayer, teaching and fellowship, and a chance for the church to simply gather and “be”.

We’d like to especially highlight our deacons for their faithful service, for coming early and staying late and for serving the congregation and leading as servants.  Additionally, we want to thank the many many folks who all contributed a dish or dessert.  Thank you all for making our church picnic such a success!

Fish Fry Community Meal https://www.gracesagola.com/2021/07/28/fish-fry-community-meal/ Wed, 28 Jul 2021 21:05:10 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=8201 The summer is the best time for a fish fry, and this month’s community meal proved that to be true once again.  We’ve had nominal but steady numbers for our community meal attendance as Covid has been reigned in, but this month’s community meal put our numbers back up to what they were pre-Covid.  With 139 in attendance we were fortunate to have planned for 150 plates.  Just enough leftovers for those extra hungry teenagers.

We also had our 2021 Fishing Derby champions awarded.  Congratulations to our winners:

  • Micah Flunker – 1st Place
  • Gary Murray – 2nd Place
  • Camdon Reed – 3rd Place

Great big thanks to Tom and Debbie and all the helpers to secured the fish and brought tables full of desserts.  To all of our cooks we say thank you, you are the BEST.  And to everyone who came to enjoy the food and fellowship, thank you for bringing and being a friend.

It wasn’t only the hymns, but afterwards we had a yummy treat to beat the summer heat with some ice cream.  Special thanks to our instrumentalists for making the service possible, and to all those who contributed and joined voices together to worship our God with the great hymns of our faith.

This year we had some first catches ever, and new award winners – stay tuned to next month’s Community Meal Fish Fry for the announcement of our champions as well as all the runner ups!

2021 Youth Group Lock-In https://www.gracesagola.com/2021/05/22/2021-youth-group-lock-in/ Sun, 23 May 2021 01:07:31 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=7934 Our 2021 Lock-In was a huge success. We had 15 amazing students who showed up ready to work, learn, and of course play. As you all may know our kids sure like to play sports and really any kind of game, so…

Our theme this year was playing on Gods team. We made our 175 pizzas first and after supplies are paid for we should be able to donate over $750 towards camp scholarships.

We started our games with an icebreaker snowball fight where we learned new facts about each other. Throughout the night we learned that God in every way is the coach of our team and the Bible is our first playbook, God has our personal game plans all written for us.

Next we really examined our dedicated to our teammates and asked the question how would Jesus rate our dedication to our team? Our answers really surprised us and we learned plays to help us become dedicated teammates. We also figured out that with God being our coach Pastor Ryan is our teams Assistant Manager:)

I cannot say enough about these kids, they were engaged and really thoughtful about their responses in lessons.

A huge thank you to Dawn Dryjanski, Jen Oman, and Natalie Rossi for all your help and for staying up all night. Thank you to our family and friends for supporting our event we hope  you enjoy the loaded pizzas… we may or may not have gotten a little overboard with our supplies. And thank you to our group for working hard to help with camp scholarships.

We had to make extra room on more tables to contain all the carbs!  Special thanks to everyone who helped contribute in both baking and bidding to make this year’s camp fundraiser a success!

We enjoyed delicious treats while seated at tables decorated around themes such as English Garden and Woodland Fairies. Lisa Reimer shared a lovely story called The Teacup Story which was about how God works in our lives.

Ladies shared stories about the special outfits they were wearing, and everyone from little girls to our senior ladies had fun visiting with each other. Thanks to everyone who decorated tables, brought treats, and got into the spirit of our tea party!

The Visible National Day of Prayer https://www.gracesagola.com/2021/05/06/the-visible-national-day-of-prayer/ Thu, 06 May 2021 14:41:18 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=7831 It is a privilege to get to pray for our community and all the various professionals that make our land great.  We believe that it is important for both the church and the member of our community to know that we are praying for them, and so each National Day of Prayer a group of us makes our way out to the corner of the road to humbly pray for a blessing over the public at large and the specific roles each person plays in creating a healthy society.

Although we only had 8 people show up to pray, God had given us 8 categories to pray for, so it worked out perfectly as we prayed for: Teachers, Government & Elected Officials, Healthcare Workers and EMS, Public Service Workers: Police and Fire; Long Term Care Facilities and Nursing Homes; Local Families, the Community as a whole, and our Local Ministers and Churches.

Ministry Leadership Team Meeting 2021 https://www.gracesagola.com/2021/01/30/ministry-leadership-team-meeting-2021/ Sun, 31 Jan 2021 02:25:59 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=7561 This year’s Ministry Team Meeting was delayed a couple of weeks due to Covid.  Along with all our other efforts to creatively curb our exposure, we’re pressing on with our church leaders to pray together and give our efforts towards a single-mindedness for our 2021 endeavors as a body.

Last year our focus was on the need for all ministry leaders to support the education and discipleship of our children.  Even though this effort continues into the future, our theme for 2021 is “Do Good”.

The idea of good works and good deeds isn’t expressed in isolation, rather we will make it our goal to pursue good works specific with our neighbors for the purpose of reaching them with the love of Jesus.  Then we will draw together a pattern of visible love with the truth of God’s Word as an invitation for others to come to repentance and find their identity in Christ.

What we discovered is that the task of evangelism is almost insurmountable for the individual, but when the whole church works cooperatively when each one fills in the gaps and weaknesses of the rest, the work is a joy.  This is the goal for our ministry leaders in 2021.  All-hands-on-deck for the work of spreading the good news of Jesus.  We will begin and lead with our deeds and by God’s grace follow up with an invitation in 2022.

Although our turn out was about half of what we’ve had in the past, I’d like to thank everyone who gave of their time this Saturday and prayed together for the extending of God’s Kingdom and glory through our various ministry efforts.

Christmas Eve Parking-Lot Service https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/12/24/christmas-eve-parking-lot-service/ Thu, 24 Dec 2020 15:04:32 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=7453 The most memorable service in 2020 was held in the parking lot at Easter.  The whole church met to worship the risen Savior from their cars as Covid has required us to become more creative in our worship.  Christmas is following suit for this year’s challenges and once more we see the whole church gathered again in the parking lot to celebrate advent of our Lord at Christmas.

We had all the regular movements of our tradition present in an outdoor service, with the lighting of the Advent wreath, singing Joy To The World, and the candle lit tranquility of Silent Night.  Although this year, it was -9 degrees with the windchill and so we had little glow sticks instead of our regular candles.

Special thanks to everyone who helped with our unique service and to the whole church for worshipping in this creative fashion.  May we all remember to make room in our hearts for Jesus and keep Him as the center of our worship.

Christmas Caroling with Covid Precautions at the Kuzaks https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/12/19/christmas-caroling-with-covid-precautions-at-the-kuzaks/ Sat, 19 Dec 2020 15:00:05 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=7423 One of the sacrifices we’ve made at Grace in an abundance of precaution for helping minimize our indoor exposures to contamination has been singing.  With a maximum of maybe 1 song (and just a portion of the song at that) we’ve lost one of the key components to the Christmas season with the absence of our traditional Christmas hymns and carols.

In an effort to reclaim this aspect of our worship, and to keep physically distanced from one another from the indoor setting, we decided to have a worship service outside.  And as a witness to the world, we decided to host the concert right in the middle of the Kuzak’s neighborhood!  In fact many of the neighbors made their way over to sing with us.

Thanks to everyone who brought the campfire rings and wood, cookies and cider, and took this opportunity to sing to our Lord about the joy that is given to us at Christmas.

Of all the unofficial judges that I spoke to, we decided that Donna Nelson had the best Trunk with her live petting zoo and chickens!  But congratulations to runner’s up: Donna Cline, the DeWitts, and Marvin and Mary dressed as Ms. Kay and Phil Robertson (respectively)!

So instead of a weeklong bible camp culminating in back-to-school supplies, we decided to do an outdoor 2-hour Carnaval where the kids would WIN their school supplies!

Whereas this sounded like a good idea in theory – we quickly found out that you need to be very organized if you have more than 15 kids – and we quickly had more than 15 kids!  We had to print more tickets than our original 30 and even after that we had kids who didn’t have any tickets winning prizes and overwhelming our volunteers… but it was the best kind of overwhelming!

Special thanks to the Midtown Bait Shop for providing ice cream, to Lake Ellen Bible Camp for allowing us to borrow a few of their carnival games, and to all our volunteers for helping to make our Back-to-School Carnival a huge success.

Geocaching Family Fun https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/07/12/geocaching-family-fun/ Sun, 12 Jul 2020 18:52:17 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6847 For those who aren’t familiar with the outdoor craze of “geocaching” it is a family friendly outdoor and coronavirus-free activity where you get to explore the great outdoors and find hidden treasures.

We had a volunteer training session after church today with help from a couple of families who are experts in the geocaching world. Our goal is to eventually have all our Grace-Kids have their geocaching markers spread all over the world in our effort to teach them about foreign world missions and the many diverse people groups all over the world.

What a beautiful day we had to learn this new adventure together. It was so much fun, that we’ll be doing a repeat of it for our Back-to-School Night next month. Special thanks to all the families who participated!

Fishing Derby https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/06/27/fishing-derby-2/ Sun, 28 Jun 2020 02:47:21 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6782 We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day for our annual Grace Church Fishing Derby! This year’s turnout was fantastic with many first-timers. With eager poles in the water, there was much anticipation for who would land that illusive lunker!

Some of the kids cast way out into the weeds and pulled in some whoppers from beyond the dock, others dropped a worm just off the edge and pulled in some beauties. Once the fish stopped biting, it was hot-dogs and swimming!

Special thanks to the Channing Bait Shop and Bob and CJ for the generosity of preparation and provisions for making this special day fun for everyone. Trophies and special awards will be given out at the July Community Meal.

Tent Meeting https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/06/07/tent-meeting/ Sun, 07 Jun 2020 16:26:44 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6728 With limited options for gathering we decided that the best way to keep the church gathering together was to move us outdoors and practice social distancing out under the blue sky.  The only problem with last Sunday… the sky was raining!

We also wanted to do what we could to honor our church’s high school graduates, and so this celebratory service back together again was also punctuated with recognizing the many great achievements of our seniors.

As the service came to a conclusion, we got a brief window of clear skies, right in time to enjoy a special graduation luncheon.  Special thanks to everyone who helped with the tent set up and tear down and everyone who helped prepare the food and make our 1st service back together a success!

Monthly “Quarantine Meal” https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/04/22/monthly-quarantine-meal/ Thu, 23 Apr 2020 03:51:50 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6620 As our time practicing social distancing continues we nevertheless have the opportunity to help feed our community. Although we always take the normal sanitary procedures in food preparation, we are all the more vigilant to remain 6 feet apart and wearing masks and gloves, all in the name of serving our Lord by serving our neighbors.

This month’s meal had potatoes donated from St. Roses and generous preparation from a couple of volunteers. We served the same number of meals as last month, and took just an extra minute when possible to ask the folks in their cars how they were coping with the quarantine. Most said that it was going ok, and they were making adjustments – but all of us hope that this will soon be over. We might have to start calling this a monthly “Quarantine Meal” instead of a Community Meal!

Till then we will continue to look for creative ways of being our Lord’s hands and feet. Special thanks to all those who helped and served to make another month’s “Quarantine Meal” a success.

Virtual Small Group https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/04/16/virtual-small-group/ Thu, 16 Apr 2020 14:42:42 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6596 Normally our small groups meet on the 1st or 3rd Thursday of the month, however due to the coronavirus we’ve had to adjust our gatherings. Now instead of living rooms we’re meetings over Zoom, and instead of hugs we’re giving thumbs-ups. We look like a modern day “brady-bunch”! I’d say the novelty of the meetings is fun right now, but many are using Zoom regularly for work meetings and conferences and the fun wears off.

For now however, it is such a blessing to have access to this kind of technology where we can still see one another and have a virtual fellowship, to laugh, share prayer requests, learn, and care for each other at a distance. One specific request has been one of our small group members Josh is leading a group from the National Guard down to Detroit to help with aid; we’re proud of you and praying for you Josh (see more HERE).

Drive-In Easter https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/04/12/drive-in-easter/ Sun, 12 Apr 2020 14:38:10 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6565 With the coronavirus keeping our community on lock down, we needed to become creative in how we can gather together for the biggest day of our Christian calendar. How can we gather together yet remain separate: the answer, a “drive-in service”.

One of our main goals was to collect food for our Food Ministry and that is always easier to do when our folks are attending worship. So, we moved the service time back 15 minutes so that everyone had ample time to adjust to the parking lot changes and drop off their donations.

Once we began the service was run over our hearing assist transmitter and each vehicle could simply tune in on their car radio. The Easter worship songs were: I Serve A Risen Savior and Christ The Lord Is Risen Today! Although pastor Ryan sang alone in the building, everyone was joining in inside their own cars. The children had a special craft for the Children’s Message that was a downloadable pdf, there was a live trumpet solo for special music from the church steps (followed by peals of car horns in applause), and the service concluded with a virtual-easter-egg-hunt that you could do over your smartphone: link to the game HERE.

The best things about this service was the simple fact that it allowed our church to gather again. However, drive-in services are still no adequate replacement for our regular fellowship, yet it was so uplifting to see one another again, and visibly know that we are not alone though this pandemic. Thanks to everyone who participated in Easter worship.

Holy Week from Home https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/04/11/holy-week-from-home/ Sun, 12 Apr 2020 05:31:31 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6531 In the middle of our national crisis, and all the adjustments that we are making, the celebration of Jesus’ triumph over the grave is still observed. However, now the traditions aren’t inside of a church building, but rather in our own homes.

Below are a few of the images and expressions of worship that our Grace Kids have been participating in over this past Holy Week. A great big “WELL DONE” to all the moms and dads who used this unique challenge as an opportunity to teach your children around the table and from your hearts!

Many blessings to you all this Easter!

“Drive-In” Easter Sunday https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/04/08/drive-in-easter-sunday/ Thu, 09 Apr 2020 03:08:09 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6518 We are excited to invite you to come to Grace on Easter Sunday, April 12th for a “Drive-In Service” at 9:15am. With inspiration from the days of drive-in movies, we will gather in a safe way to celebrate the Resurrection.

Part of our Easter celebration will include:

  • Special Messages
  • Interactive Children’s Sermon
  • Holy Communion
  • Receiving Tithes and Offerings
  • Receiving Donations for the Food Ministry
  • and A Virtual Easter Egg Hunt after the Service

Instructions:
Please bring your Bible and an attitude of JOY to worship at a socially-distant distance. If you are able, please bring your own grape juice and bread for Communion (if you cannot, we will have individually sealed cups with wafers available that will be handled and passed out with complete sterilization). Please arrive a little early if you intend on dropping off items for the Food Ministry (please just leave them on the church steps and our volunteers will safely transport them inside). At the end of the service we will have a basket at the front of the church for you to deposit your offering (please do not hand an envelope to anyone, you can simply drop it into the basket after the service is over). Bathrooms are available inside the church if needed, but the service will end by 10am.

Parents can download the Children’s Sermon Craft HERE, and bring crayons or colored pencils to keep your little ones interacting with the message during the service.

Please use appropriate care and concern for our neighbors as we gather in this unique way, and together we will be doing our part in slowing the spread of this virus as Christians united-in-separation.

Update to Coronavirus & Covid-19 Pandemic https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/04/04/update-to-coronavirus-covid-19-pandemic/ Sun, 05 Apr 2020 05:03:04 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6505

Amidst these days of unfamiliar trials and fears we continue to ask that God will draw near to us and ground our faith in His Word and promises.  To that end, we prayerfully uphold our community, country, and world through this pandemic, remembering specifically those who are sick and dying and for those working in our Healthcare Services.

Our original timetable for pausing our regular gatherings was until April. Then per the Governor’s Stay-Home orders, until April 14th, and now per the White House’s extension of quarantine through the end of the month of April.

Thankfully, Governor Whitmer has permitted that religious places of worship can continue to operate, and the orders from the Attorney General are: “A place of religious worship is not subject to penalty under section 3 of Executive Order 2020-11, but under the Stay Home, Stay Safe Order, it is required that all individuals who leave their home or place of residence must adhere to social distancing measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including remaining at least six feet from people from outside the individual’s household to the extent feasible.

Therefore, in our ongoing efforts to collectively encourage preventative-participation in this global crisis, we will keep our normal ministry schedule suspended until the end of April, at which point we will reevaluate again according to the recommendations of the CDC and our government officials.

During this abnormal Easter season, I am reminded of Paul’s words while in chains and under house arrest:

“Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David.  This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal.  But God’s Word is not chained. Therefore, I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.”

We too, therefore, will endure — for God’s word is not quarantined!  In light of the optimism of Easter I have a few exciting opportunities to pass on to you.

  1. Food Ministry Drop-Off: The church building will be reopened for Food Ministry drop-off ONLY on Easter morning, April 12th.  We will have volunteers at the doors ready to receive anything you’re able to donate.
  2. Easter Books: The books “The Case For Easter” are still available at the church for our corporate encouragement to stay focused on the hope of resurrection during these difficult days.
  3. Drive-In Church Service: We will be gathering on Easter morning, April 12th @ 9:15am at the church for a “Drive-In Service”!  This gathering will be strictly from the confines of your vehicle habitat and will be a 30-40 minute service ending no later than 10am.  Please bring your Bible, your own cup of coffee, and a heart of joy for this creative gathering as we plan to take every precaution in celebrating our Living Lord!
  4. Giving: As I have had many of you ask about giving, we want to stress that you keep your gifts in proportion to your ability and only give as you’re able to do so cheerfully during these financially difficult times.  Bonnie has requested that you mail in your gifts to our church’s Post Office Box: PO Box #9, Sagola, MI 49881.  The “Drive-In Service” Sunday morning on April 12th will also provide an opportunity to give.
  5. Prayer: We will have an updated prayer list as well as new individual prayer-cards available on the 12th, so that we can keep current as we normally would throughout the month.

I want to thank you for all your many efforts to stay connected though phone calls, cards, and texts.  Thank you for your care to your “Circle” and thank you for taking the time to read through all we are endeavoring to do during this crisis.

Remember to quiet your heart during Holy Week and connect with your family as you are able.  Observance of Good Friday and the traditions of our church are now your responsibility to practice from your heart.

And while it may feel like you are “chained up” in your house, remember God’s Word is not chained.  May we find the continued health of our community as led by those whose minds are governed by the gospel and whose hearts are willing to endure these days with creative worship!

Blessings,
Pastor Ryan

Feeding via Distance https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/03/25/feeding-via-distance/ Wed, 25 Mar 2020 15:46:20 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6476 Even though our world is in a period of change, the need for some ministries will likely never change. Our Food Ministry and Community Meal are two of those. However, both needed to be creatively adapted to fit our efforts for “social distancing” and quarantine.

Whereas we normally get a decent amount of food donated, in just this one past week, we had more food than we’ve ever had for a delivery. Our volunteers said it was more than they had ever seen. So much so in fact, that we’re going to suspend the Food Ministry for 2 weeks, so we don’t incidentally overload families with too much food!!! (If anyone hears of a family in need, please contact Sue, because we will have room to add to our list if this keeps up!)

The Community Meal had major adjustments. No gathering, no receiving dishes from anyone, a skeleton kitchen crew, deliveries, and extra gloves and masks were the solution to our social separation. But even so, we still served almost 3/4th of our regular plates. (Special thanks to all those who made deliveries, and who donated the to-go boxes).

Remember we are in this crisis together and therefore making adjustments together will get us through. Your neighbors will still need love, your community will still need care – let us work together and be smart in how we serve!

Coronavirus Covid-19 Announcement https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/03/18/coronavirus-covid-19-announcement/ Thu, 19 Mar 2020 03:32:13 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6452 At Grace, our response to this Covid-19 National Crisis is first and foremost a call to prayer for our nation, our world, and for those who are suffering with the demands and limitations of quarantine and grieving from loss of loved ones.

Secondly, we petition all believers to join in our collective national effort to reduce transmission and infection to a minimum through responsible hygiene and following the recommendations from officials to gather with care, and for a time – to limit our public gathering.

To that end, we are canceling all services and gatherings until April, at which point we will reevaluate based off of the most updated information at that time. It is important that we support the collective efforts of our community based upon FACTS and not fear.

The fact is: viruses travel even amid our best preventative measures. If we can help keep our medical facilities along with doctors and nurses from becoming overwhelmed by temporarily suspending communal interaction, then let us get creative with ministry and bring the Word of God to our streets, living rooms, and communication platforms – for the church is a people and not a place.

Finally, although services will be canceled, there are some new opportunities and requests that I’d like to optimistically share:

  1. Food Ministry Drop-off: Despite the fact that services are canceled, the church will be OPEN on Sunday from 9-10am for the specific purpose of bringing food and supplies to be handed out (hopefully weekly). These weeks will bring an increased strain on many in our community and we have the opportunity to bring real tangible help by filling our cupboards to give away. Sue will be evaluating our food supply, and we would ask each one as they are able to purchase a little extra and send it up to church on or before Sunday morning. We will not be congregating, but we will all be contributing.
  2. Easter Book Study: Along with our Daily Lenten Devotional we will be starting a church-wide book study on Easter. Copies will be available at the church starting Wednesday, March 25th, and there is one waiting there just for you to pick up. As many are staying in and hunkering down, we hope you will find unexpected time to brush-up on your spiritual discipline of study and reading. Because these are crazy-days we are living in, this is a church-wide effort to engage together and keep our attention and focus on Jesus and His resurrection.
  3. Corona-Circles: Although it may sound like a beer around a campfire – it’s not. With the working title “Corona-Circles”, we have created mini-fellowships or “Circles” for EVERYONE in our church. These are not intended to be permanent but it would be incredible if they lasted beyond this current cultural scare. The purpose of each “Circle” is threefold: (1) Communication – think of it as a phone tree to stay in touch and connected in our socially-distant time; (2) Care – the other individuals in your circle are each of your responsibility to be a support and encouragement with calls, cards, texts, and treats; (3) Community – these “Circles” will be your most tangible expression of the church during this temporary time of distancing, please make an effort to reach out and support one another. You will be receiving a group email from me this week with your “Circle” and the contact information for each family in your circle.
  4. Digital Sermons: We hope this is only a brief hiatus from our regular morning worship services, but until then I will have a short devotional video posted to our website under “Sermons” that I hope you can take advantage of and use for spiritual enrichment. I know you’ll all miss my 60 minute messages, but don’t worry we’ll get through this together before you know it!
  5. The Community Meal: This month’s Community Meal on March 25th will not be canceled, but it will be amended. Rather than our regular fellowship at 5:30, we will instead be packaging “to-go” meals that will be handed out at the door. If you know of anyone who is unable to make it to the meal, you are welcome to take more meals to help with delivery. We will postpone our “International Cuisine” theme for a different time, and so we will not be taking any food dishes from the church. Everything will be prepared and cooked at the Township Hall and all volunteers will be strictly abiding above and beyond in food handling and sanitization. Take-out meals will begin at 5:30.

Thank you for taking the time to read through all our plans and procedures for the next couple weeks. Please be in prayer for all those working in Medical Services, First Responders, and Home Care. Thank you for your willingness to try something new and go the extra mile to be one another’s keepers and cheerleaders. And thank you for participating in a way that will reveal to the world that we are making the most of every opportunity and, as God’s representatives, seeking the welfare of our city.

Blessings,
Pastor Ryan

There were gift baskets, crafts, artwork, photo booths, games, prizes, and much more fun!  Family fun within the church community can open up so many great opportunities to build trust and pass on to our kids the relationships that will help define who they see themselves as: Children of the King.

Thanks to everyone who came and participated – it was a great start on what can become many more family-outings.

It is also because we had a new game – not sure what its called, but you roll up a bunch of cling wrap and put prizes throughout and then take turns seeing who can unwrap it fastest to earn the best prizes!  Fun for all ages.

Ministry Leadership Team Meeting https://www.gracesagola.com/2020/01/11/ministry-leadership-team-meeting-2/ Sun, 12 Jan 2020 02:13:18 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=6197 Our annual Ministry Leadership Team Meeting was again well attended and had awesome participation as each ministry of the church shared with one another their 2019 report and goals for 2020.

The best part (2nd only to fabulous catered lunch by Debbie) was our cooperate strategy session as we all brainstormed together how all the ministries at Grace can work together to help reach our young people.

The most important part of this 1st meeting of the year (and decade) is the time we all spend in prayer for the ministry and direction of our church. As each body is made up of many parts, so the church – as Christ’s body – has many parts, and each one belongs to the other.

We look with faith and expectation for God to keep expanding the opportunities to serve and the presence of His Kingdom come.

Food Ministry https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/10/27/food-ministry/ Sun, 27 Oct 2019 06:08:03 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5999 A brand new ministry here at Grace is in replacement of our long running Food Pantry.  With continued partnership with our brothers and sisters from St. Roses in Channing, we have asked each member to weekly bring in a food item for giving away to folks in our local community.

Along with the regular items, we are blessed to send cards and little other “goodies” of love in each of the baskets as they are hand delivered to the doorsteps of those we are blessed to serve.

This coming holiday season we’re asking for individuals to donate a turkey or ham, and after just one announcement in Sunday morning service we already have more to give away than we have homes to deliver to on our list!

We are so blessed to have the privilege of giving and in a little over 2 weeks we’ve filled our giving baskets twice!  Although this rate is probably not sustainable, we want to offer a great big thank you to everyone who has so generously given to help feed those in our local community!

Matthew 7:7-8

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Many of the church participants also went above and beyond with their trunks decorated for the event and routinely I heard the cat-calls begging for the offloading of more sugary treats (seems we might have gone a little overboard with the candy… as is easy to do!).

All in all it was a special time of family fun along with the church to encourage engagement and participation in greeting those little munchkins and mermaids with the love of Christ.

North Dickinson Churches to Partner in Missions Support https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/10/20/north-dickinson-churches-to-partner-in-missions-support/ Mon, 21 Oct 2019 05:56:03 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5931 This Sunday we were blessed to receive Pastor Sreeraj from the Banjara tribal group in India working in Andhra Pradesh with Agape Outreach Mission.  Pastor Sreeraj and Pastor Ryan are both connected with BILD International out of Ames Iowa and equipping churches and pastors through the School of Antioch alone with Pastor Joe Basso from Felch Mountain Bible Chapel.  Because of our connections across these ministry avenues we are working towards a loose partnership with all the small North Dickinson churches from Foster City to Sagola to combine our efforts in helping support the work of church planting in India.

Although we are in the very early stages of this partnership we were blessed to meet Sreeraj and hear his testimony and learn about the work going on among the Banjara for the gospel of Jesus Christ.  After addressing the congregation this past Sunday, the church took up a free will offering to help support Sree and his family and their ministry endeavors.  We are looking forward to seeing how God will unite our efforts and how even small churches in the middle of the woods can make a Kingdom impact.  We keep telling ourselves the truth that even though we are small – if everyone does a little – we can do a lot!

Please keep Pastor Sreeraj and the ministry of Agape Outreach Mission along with the growing partnerships between the North Dickinson churches in your prayers.

Fall Festival 2019 https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/10/12/fall-festival-2019/ Sun, 13 Oct 2019 05:53:52 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5919 We decided this year to separate our traditional “Fall Fest” and “Trunk-or-Treat” because it seems each year it hovers right around the freezing mark near October 31st and the “festival” part of “Fall Fest” should be renamed “freezing”.

Well, that plan didn’t work.  As if on regular schedule, the coldest day of the fall was guess what… on “Fall Fest”!  However, that didn’t stop our kids and families from celebrating.  This year we were fortunate to hold Fall Fest at “R Cabins” in Channing, and that gave us the freedom to include many more outside activities and even a hay ride.

Even with the large snow flakes and chilly temps, we want to give a great big thank you to all those who put together the family fun, and thanks to everyone who bundled up and participated in the festivities.

Youth Fund Raising Ice Cream Sale https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/09/08/youth-fund-raising-ice-cream-sale/ Mon, 09 Sep 2019 05:51:55 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5913 With the summer wrapping up, the Bait Shop in Channing was working through selling their final inventory of ice cream, and in generosity to our youth at Grace, they offered all the proceeds to the youth group fund if our youth would volunteer to help serve.

Well, that was all it took to find all the kids in the surrounding neighborhoods come in droves for free ice cream and the opportunity to work in the Bait Shop.  There were so many children that they had to break into shifts, so that some would be eating ice cream outside and the rest would be serving inside.

Additionally, the community came out in support of the Kennard’s generosity and donated over $500 to our youth program.  Originally, CJ was nervous that they might not have enough ice cream, but as it turned out, with or without the tasty treats our community is stalwart in helping our young people.  Special thanks to everyone who came out to serve, and to all those who gave, and especially to the Bait Shop for this generous opportunity.

Church Picnic at the Sportsman Club https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/08/18/church-picnic-at-the-sportsman-club/ Sun, 18 Aug 2019 17:33:46 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5720 Our annual church picnic was another packed occasion. Even though there were isolated rain storms, we still had all except about 6 folding chairs filled with wall-to-wall worshippers as the church was transported from our usual location to the fellowship hall of the Sagola Sportsman’s Club.

In regular impressive fashion, the Lord multiplied the “loaves” in that even though the signup sheet was pretty barren, everyone brought a dish and once more there were leftovers needing to be packed up and ushered home. With 3 songs and our prayers, we started a new series on the The Creeds of the Christian Church and focused on how the Apostles’ Creed was used by the early church in baptism, and how we can reclaim its use and place in our worship services today.

Thank you to all the organizers and volunteers who helped to make this year’s picnic a success!

Baptism Sunday at Lake Eddy https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/08/18/baptism-sunday-at-lake-eddy/ Sun, 18 Aug 2019 17:29:09 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5694 The practice of baptism in the church has been from the beginning a practice done in obedience to Jesus’ command for how we are to make disciples. It symbolizes the scriptural truths of washing, death, and new birth, and it identifies us with Christ and with His people.

Today we celebrated the baptism of 6 of our worshippers here at Grace. Although the mode of baptism has been varied throughout the ages, we took the opportunity of our church picnic at Lake Eddy to wade down into the water and take the plunge. In a very yooper fashion, Lake Eddy is located at the Sagola Sportsman’s Club, and each candidate entered the chilly water with the shooting range firing off rounds in the background… seemed like a veritable 21 gun salute with each immersion.

With the church crowded around the shore, each Christ-follower made their public declaration of faith with one step in front of the other to enter the water in personal obedience to Jesus’ call. For their faith this was a real appropriation of God’s free gift of grace as seen in baptism to wash away the old and stand anew, now with the rest of God’s people, in unity and oneness of mind and Spirit. Even little Josh Jr. was surrounded by his family and baptized by his grandfather, being welcomed into the church family to grow under our mentoring and accountability as he learns to walk by faith.

Special thanks to all those who participated in today baptism and we rejoice with all the candidates as those who also daily cling to God’s grace!

Back to School Fun Night and Sundae Bar https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/08/04/back-to-school-fun-night-and-sundae-bar/ Sun, 04 Aug 2019 16:10:47 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5655 Starting last year because of the abundance of school shootings in our country, we here at Grace decided we would like to support the families in our community by offering free resources for Back-to-School and praying for all the teachers and students in the North Dickinson area.  Our hope was to show a sense of solidarity between those working with our children’s education and the local Christian community such that we’d work together for their growth, betterment, and protection in a world filled with pain, selfishness, and confusion.

We would like to offer a great big thank you to all those who donated for the supplies and giveaways from local businesses including: Storheims, A&W, Hardees, Thomas Theaters, Crispignia’s, UP Chaga, Paul Fornetti, Walmart, Edwards Chevrolet, Boss Snowplow and many others.

Praise-Fest https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/08/03/praise-fest/ Sat, 03 Aug 2019 15:56:51 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5616 A few months ago we were approached with the idea for having a Christian concert run and performed by all the local churches.  Even though the time frame was short we had more than enough interest to scheduled a full complement artists, singers, and performers.  There were longtime friends in bands, new groups that played together specifically for the Praise Fest, and local church praise bands.  The venue was “R Cabins” in Channing and it turned out to be a perfect spot.  Not only did it provide enough space for all the lawn chairs and shade trees, but there was also plenty of room for children to run and play, and the parking on the highway was supplemented with the R Cabins golf cart picking up and dropping off anyone who needed a shorter walk.

As this was the first ever event of this sort, we are extremely thankful for all the good participation and attendance.  The lasting impression was that of God’s people coming together for informal but heartfelt worship.  The sky and trees became our sanctuary, and the voices were made up of worshippers from all denominations.  Thank you to all those who contributed to make this event a success.

VBS 2019 https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/08/02/vbs-2019/ Fri, 02 Aug 2019 15:52:33 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5590 We had an amazing VBS this year!  We added 25% more kids attending than last year and our volunteer support was incredible.  Thank you to all those who would show up hours ahead of the children to prep your areas; whether it was snacks, games, crafts or the Bible lessons – thank you for helping to make VBS a success!

This year’s theme was “ROAR! Have A Ferocious Faith” and our partner church in Kingsford did the same curriculum, so we want to give a great big Thank You to all those helpers who allowed us to borrow their artwork, decorations and ideas!  Everyone was truly impressed with the transformation of the church area into the sights and sounds of the African plains!

Generally the most “favorite” part of VBS is either the crafts, games, or snacks.  However we heard over and over again how much the children enjoyed the Bible lesson time!  The feasibility of reaching our children with the gospel is multiplied when Christians work together, and so once more – Thank you to everyone who participated and cooperated.  We look forward to watching the Spirit continue to grow these little ones in the faith as God’s people keep working in union with the Spirit and each other.

Fish Fry https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/07/30/fish-fry-2/ Tue, 30 Jul 2019 15:47:26 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5550 This year’s fish fry was the best attended ever with over 200+ individuals attending.  We brought over all the chairs from the church and still we ran out of seating both inside and outside.  Part of the large draw was due to the VBS kids joining us, and because of the addition to grilled sweet corn to the menu.

At the beginning of the evening we started with awarding our little fishermen from last month’s Annual Fishing Derby.  Congratulations to little Lonnie MacIntyre for winning 1st place!

The Community Meal is precisely what its name entails: a meal for the whole community.  We would like to thank all those who helped with the preparations, cooking, serving, and clean up.  Our organizers said that even though we had more people than ever go through the line, it was the fastest and easiest clean up ever too.

Missionaries and Commissioning https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/07/07/missionaries-and-commissioning/ Sun, 07 Jul 2019 15:41:57 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5472 This Sunday we were blessed to have two of our missionaries join us for worship and report on God’s faithfulness over the past 12 months.  Heather Petty, serving in the DR, shared how their ministry continues to grow and how the church can be involved in many ways.  The Turners shared of God’s goodness to bring 7 new baptisms through their ministry and a continued vision of outreach through creative meetings like an annual “out-door” service.

We were also blessed to have two of our high schoolers commissioned for a summer of service at Lake Ellen where they lead music and serve as camp counselors.  Our missionaries, elders, and church family prayed for them as they are sent out from us to carry the message of the gospel with words and works for those very impressionable weeks that youngsters have at camp.

It’s such a blessing to see all the families and children waving and celebrating what God has given us in our freedoms.  This year’s float theme was in preparation for next month’s VBS, beginning July 29th – August 2nd.  We passed out flyers and invitations to all the sightseers and are hopeful for another banner turnout for Vacation Bible School at Grace.

Even though some random rain clouds threatened the event, we had an excellent turnout and the 1 hour service was more than just 3 congregations worshipping together, it became a picture of God’s people united under the banner that “Jesus is Lord.”

The resounding conclusion from all the worshippers was “we need to do this again!”  Thanks and praise to our God for a beautiful picture of unity and deference to one another.  When churches today are all too often dividing, we’re grateful for the unity of God’s Spirit and likemindedness of His people to consider others as better than ourselves and be willing to lay down our agendas and causes to take up the banner of our God’s glory through the redemptive work of His Son, Jesus.

…stay tuned for more to come as we keep looking for more ways to encourage God’s people to partner and participate in worship.

3rd Annual Fishing Derby https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/06/08/3rd-annual-fishing-derby/ Sat, 08 Jun 2019 23:25:16 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5307 We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather for this year’s fishing derby.  As usual the kids poles were busy snatching the fish from the water, but new to this year (and in contrast to our normal location at Lake Eddy) the poles were soon exchanged for swimsuits as the fish fever was cooled by swimming and splashing.

All in all its always an important time to spend time together with our kids, sharing the great outdoors, and building those skills, values, and relationships which are hard to engender in front of the many screens that occupy children’s attention today.

The awards will be given out for the Fishing Derby winners at the July Community Meal Fish Fry!  Special thanks to all those who participated in another successful tournament.

Chipotle Grilled Small Group Gathering https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/05/23/chipotle-grilled-small-group-gathering/ Thu, 23 May 2019 13:13:33 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5264 At the end of May we wrapped up what has been a successful year in gathering with the church in each other’s homes as “small groups.”  The scheduling conflicts of summer plans tend to stifle the momentum of meeting together, and a few months away have all of us looking with anticipation for reuniting back together again in September.

In effort to end it with a bang, we all met at Pastor Ryan’s house, and this year the theme was a Chipotle cookout (patterned after the delicious restaurant chain).  In like fashion, everyone had to stand in line and put in their orders while Pastor Ryan and Emily served and attempted to wrap giant burritos, and portion out 4 different types of salsa.

The ministry of “small groups” seeks to unite the church as a family in the context and setting of our homes, and develop unbreakable bonds defined as a community of faith, so that through our greatest joys and sorrows we can walk this journey of life together.  See you all in a couple months!

Although a traditionally sorrowful moment for the church, we found that the uniting with fellow brothers and sisters in the Lord to be a most joyful moment on this day that we call confess as “good.”

Pastor Kyle gave an inspiring sermon revealing the immeasurable love of God shown in Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet. And not just of the faithful, but all the disciples, including Judas. How very difficult to imagine the love that Jesus demonstrated in the humiliating cleansing of the disciples’ feet, and a great reminder of His love shown to us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Special thanks to the saints at Mission Covenant Chruch, and to all those who spent the evening worshipping together in remembrance of Jesus sacrificial death on the cross for us.

Maundy Thursday Seder Meal https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/04/18/maundy-thursday-seder-meal/ Fri, 19 Apr 2019 04:25:43 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5077 This year Grace celebrated Maundy Thursday with a Seder meal. The design of our mail is structured to function as much as possible as a “family style.” Traditionally, the father would lead the meal and the mother and children would have special roles to play. We divided up, after the main meal, into separate tables and (by democratic vote) appointed a “father,” “mother,” and “child” to each table.

The memorial dinner was informative and interactive. All of the traditional elements of a Jewish seder were present except with a contemporary Christian flair. While we read from the Old Testament the message of God’s deliverance of His people, we also read from the New Testament as to Jesus fulfillment of God’s foreordained promises. Additionally, we focused on Jesus’ last supper with his disciples and how the drama unfolded in line with much of the symbolism of the meal itself.

Along with the seder we also had a wonderful dinner catered and graciously donated to the church. Special thanks to Tom Gursky for his solo, and for all our helpers, especially the Ladies Sewing Team with the attention to detail and decorations as well as serving the entire meal.

Palm Sunday https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/04/14/palm-sunday/ Mon, 15 Apr 2019 04:17:09 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=5010 To commemorate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem we celebrated with our traditional Palm Sunday service.  The key message of the morning worship was Jesus as the “cornerstone.”  Giving our attention to the crowds while they offered praise to Jesus on that glorious morning as he rode on the back of a colt, we gave careful evaluation to our own praise, and self-examination to make sure that we are honoring Jesus in obedience and sincerity.

Although the cries of “Hosanna” touch a special place in our hearts, we must recall the change of tune from the crowd only 1 week later.  May God help us to be offering more to Jesus than “lip-service” – that he would instead be the Ruler of our hearts!

Again and again we had individuals both out bid other, and then turn right around and offer to their competition the new purchased item free of charge.  And twice we had a bidding war that reached $100! (In all honestly they were for CJ’s cheesecakes! so… yeah).

Thank you to everyone who participated and brought in their labors of love in form of cupcakes and cookies, and for our whole church family for joining together to support our children’s ministry.

Missionaries – Mara and Jacob to Mexico https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/03/17/missionaries-mara-and-jacob-to-mexico/ Sun, 17 Mar 2019 19:07:28 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=4874

On March first we piled into a 15 passenger van and headed down to Juarez, Mexico for our annual His House spring break missions trip. We worked with the organization Casas por Cristo to build a house for a family of eight who needed it desperately. We picked up a few more members along the way and drove the 30+-hour drive only stopping one night for rest until arriving in El Paso where we spent the night at a church.

Monday morning we crossed the border and brought our belongings to the church that was hosting us for the week then headed to the worksite. When we arrived at the site, there was an empty space and some materials stacked up for the build. Our Casas missionary began directing us and we began leveling out our foundation and building a frame for it while the rest of us began assembling walls. By the end of day one, we had a cement slab and our walls built. Day two we put our walls up and began covering them with blackboard, then chicken wire while others worked on the roof or inside doing insulation. We were lucky to have the pastor that was ministering to the family invite us for lunch Tuesday and Wednesday.

By day three we were ready for stucco and drywall, along with other details that needed to be done. There is nothing more rewarding than spending you time and energy to serve others. We had the opportunity to interact with the family and play with their children. Wednesday evening, the church that was hosting us threw us a party with music and dinner to show us how glad they were to have us stay with them. It was very humbling to see all of these people who had close to nothing provide us a meal, share testimonies with us, and sing to us and with us.

Thursday morning we finished a few things and dedicated the house where the pastor shared the gospel with the family and we presented them with the keys to their house, for free. All of the money that we raised for the trip covered the cost of the house so that we could give them this house free of charge. We met a lot of amazing people on this trip and they were all willing to share with us and encourage us in every way they could.

We thank you for giving us this opportunity to serve again and for all of the support!

Jr High Pizza Making Lock-In 2019! https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/03/16/jr-high-pizza-making-lock-in-2019/ Sun, 17 Mar 2019 02:22:40 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=4825 Our 6th annual lockin was held Friday March 15. We had 7 Jr High students and 2 high school students attend. We had a Fiesta theme and celebrated our Friendship with God.

The crew sold 215 pizzas-we also made 11 pizzas to bring to Abram Johnson and his family. Lake Ellen Bible Camp and Abram Johnson will each be getting a $500 donation. It took 2 1/2 hrs.

Our lessons focused on Luke 5 17-26 and we learned how we can help carry our friends to know Jesus and how sometimes we have to be carried. We each focused on how we can be better friends with God and with others. We played different games throughout the night. The students worked very hard and should he proud!

Health Fair – sponsored by Helping Hearts https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/03/09/health-fair-sponsored-by-helping-hearts/ Sat, 09 Mar 2019 18:49:36 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=4795 Today we held our first ever “Health Fair” for our church family and community for those 55 and older.  The purpose of today’s fair was to help spread awareness and helpful information for the needs and concerns of those looking to educate themselves for potential challenges in the future.

The presenters did a marvelous job tying in both their particular sphere of influence (whether chiropractic or alternative health, nutrition or balancing the need for rest and exercise) with the spiritual realties that affect many seniors who battle with anxiety and depression.

After the main presentations, all the attendees were able to interact with our health professionals at various booths they set up.  The afternoon was finished with a wonderfully healthy meal prepared by Debbie Gursky along with her sharing keen insights into cooking healthy and well seasoned meals.

We had a better turn out than expected and look forward to continuing these enterprises for awareness and healthy living, looking to include more community members and our neighboring churches too.  Special thanks to all those involved in helping make our first ever Health Fair, sponsored by our Helping Hearts Ministry, a success.

Our Missionaries in Grand Rapids https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/03/04/our-missionaries-in-grand-rapids/ Mon, 04 Mar 2019 15:22:36 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=4765 This past Sunday we hosted Aaron and Rachel Turner from Crosswinds: a church plant in Grand Rapids.  Aaron and Rachel have been serving on staff for a couple years and came back to Sagola this Sunday to give a report and offer thanks to our congregation for partnering with them in reaching the under privileged and lost in their unique demographic found in the more urban centers surrounding Grand Rapids.

Along with their report, Aaron and Rachel brought us their talents.  One of the “hats” that Aaron wears at Crosswinds is that of Worship Pastor.  So, we dug out our instruments up here in Upper Michigan and played along with the Turners for a more bluegrass beat to our normal worship service.  It was a lot of fun to have extended singing time on Sunday.

Our Missions Director Angela Applekamp is currently talking with the Turners about a short-term missions trip to Grand Rapids possibly this August.  We are grateful for all the Lord is accomplishing through this ministry, and it is a privilege to partner with the Turners in reaching those beyond our roads here in the UP.

Family Fun Game Night https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/01/26/family-fun-game-night/ Sat, 26 Jan 2019 16:23:12 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=4648 The doldrums of winter have no ability to stop our families from coming out to a bit of fun and food!  To keep the good times rolling we had our first ever “family game night” sponsored at the church by the Helping Hearts team.

It started out with the adults eating the food and the children running amuck.  But soon, when we broke out the games, all the kids seemed to flock to the screaming adults as our competitive sides came out!

It was a lot of fun, and a great break from mundane.  Special thanks to all those who helped make our Family Fun Night a success.

Annual Chili Cook Off https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/01/23/annual-chili-cook-off-2/ Wed, 23 Jan 2019 16:20:47 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=4638 Another banner presentation of the culinary abilities of these Michiganders here in the UP has been recorded in the books for our annual Chili Cook Off for 2019!

This year the format of judging was updated, with special thanks to our Community Meal coordinators in devising this participatory process of crowing the champion.  Of all 10 contestants, numbers were given on each of the pots and as the hungry judges made they way through the line, we were each handed a sample bowl to decide which Chili is supreme.

Not a single pot was left without a vote, however the winner was by a landslide with an over 50% margin of victory #5, and the grand champion: Terry McDonald!

Congratulations to all the contestants, especially Tom Gursky with his “Bear Chili” bringing in 3rd place, and runner-up Bob Kennard with his traditional recipe carrying 2nd place.  However, the congratulations really belong to all those seated at the tables, because with chow this good, we’re all winners!

Ministry Leadership Team Meeting https://www.gracesagola.com/2019/01/05/ministry-leadership-team-meeting/ Sat, 05 Jan 2019 16:18:44 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=4630 Today we held our annual Ministry Leadership Team Meeting.  As we have moved through the year of 2018 serving our Lord, it has been exciting to see how God continues to mold and shape our ministries.  The diversity of the body of Christ is clearly evident in the multiplicity of spheres where our church is serving each other and the community.

We’ve had some exciting new ministries start this past year and we’ve got some new ones on the horizon here for 2019.   The purpose of our meeting this year is to work towards a “Ministry Fair” on the last Sunday of the month where each of our leaders will address the entire congregation outlining (1) the scope and commitment that their ministry entails (2) why they are passionate about serving God is this way (3) how others can also get involved in serving too.

Of the primary themes we covered, perhaps most crucial is to remember that as leaders our individual “ministries” are not actually our ministries.  Firstly, they are truly not ours because we are simply seeking to be woven into the work that God is already doing.  And secondly, they are not our ministry, because as leaders it is the people serving in our ministry who are of first importance.  This includes the simple but often overlooked priorities of good communication, cooperation, and character development.

By God’s grace we’re excited about the Ministry Fair on the 26th and all that God is going to continue to work out in our service through 2019!

Why just listen on the radio when you can come out in person and hear Amy Shreve in concert.  We were blessed to have Amy Shreve and her husband Gary join us in our preparation for Jesus’ birth with a special Christmas concert.

Along with many of her original pieces, Amy led the congregation in worship with many of the old favorite Christmas Carols.  She also shared her unique testimony of God’s continued faithfulness to her through the ups and downs of life.

A great big thank you to Amy and Gary for making this season extra special!

The Christmas season wouldn’t be complete without our little ones leading us through the Christmas story from the perspective of the angels and a commentary from the livestock of that glorious night.  Not only did the children do an awesome job acting and reading, but they also led us in a couple of their favorite songs.

Special thanks to Angie and Emily for helping to put the program.

Special thanks to Tom Gursky and helpers for serving as official auctioneer and navigating the tumultuous bidding wars between Helen’s cinnamon rolls and the youth’s no-bake cookies and brownies, and to all those who gave so generously to help to support the Lord’s work in equipping the next generation.

Fall Harvest Offering Garage Sale Fund Raiser https://www.gracesagola.com/2018/10/13/fall-harvest-offering-garage-sale-fund-raiser/ Sat, 13 Oct 2018 20:26:10 +0000 https://www.gracesagola.com/?p=4159 Over the course of 2 amazing days, we saw what felt like hundreds of visitors come to help fund our Children’s Education Wing by combing through the many treasures donated in our Garage Sale.  With tables of goods streaming into each adjacent room, the maze of shopping opportunities ranged from excellent clothes to hunting and fishing gear.

After all the dust had settled, the Lord provided over $1,000 towards our fund raising goals.  We’d like to offer a great big “Thank you” to everyone who donated and to everyone who helped make this past week’s sale a success!

Back-to-School Prayer Night and Sundae Bar https://www.gracesagola.com/2018/08/19/back-to-school-prayer-night-and-sundae-bar/ Sun, 19 Aug 2018 16:19:28 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=3965 Through the Lord’s leading and blessing to a few of our members we hosted our first ever “Back-to-School Prayer Night and Sundae Bar.”  The idea was to try and be a blessing to the families in our church and community, and secondly to show a solidarity between our congregation and the local school over at North Dickinson.  The sad reality is our world has too much evil in the schools we want to stand together with those seeking God’s glory in the lives of our students for a change for the better.

The service was short, with prayer led by three of our children, praying for (1) students, (2) teachers, and (3) parents.  Pastor Ryan gave a short mediation from Luke 12 reminding the students to “watch their step,” “fear God only,” and “live courageously as a Christian.”  Without eclipsing the message, however, the service was immediately followed with an ice cream sundae bar with all the trimmings, and concluded with a Grand Prize give-a-way where, because of the generous donations of local businesses, each child was able to go home with a prize!  Along with their loot, each child received the required school supplies including: paper, folders, pencils, markers, notebooks, crayons, hand sanitizer, erasers, scissors, and much more.

Special thanks to all the volunteers and parents who helped make the 1st ever Back-to-School Prayer Night a huge success!

A great big thank you and heartfelt appreciation to all those in our congregation who helped to serve, prepare food, and give to each other.

90th Anniversary Celebration https://www.gracesagola.com/2018/07/22/90th-anniversary-celebration/ Sun, 22 Jul 2018 23:53:32 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=3783 My name is Yvonne (Swanson) Schultz. My grandfather Walter Swanson and my step-Grandmother Inga were founding members of this church. My parents Harold (Gabby) Swanson and my mother Ione Swanson went to church occasionally, usually church programs. I have been a member of the church in Sagola all my life, with a few lapses – too busy, hard to bring the kids they are too noisy etc. My children and grandchildren have been a part of this church and I have many wonderful memories of programs and seeing them baptized and some of them confirmed in this church. Although I wish they would attend more often I would like to think that the future for some of them will be as members here and their children and children’s children.

For 90 years this church has been a place of worship and fellowship and help to the people in the area. There have been hard times and sometimes we struggled to pay the bills. Occasionally paying a full time minister was not possible but many guest speakers and clergy filled the pulpit and we moved forward. As always God provided what we needed. I would like to personally Thank Rev. Bill Payne, Rev. Clayton Parcels and Rev. David Van Dam. Bill and Clayton filled the pulpit and moderated our Session meetings, sometimes coming a long way to do so. David Van Dam who was the head of Macinac Presbytery in Petosky worked very hard to keep things going in the hard times. They and so many more people helped to strengthen our church and get us where we are today. Over the years we have added a new sanctuary and this past year new class rooms.

A strong and vibrant Presbyterian Church is in place in Sagola and although there will be times of distress; the future looks full and bright.

Two different families who have been performing together for years, Chris Koontz singing lead, his oldest son Isaac singing bass and Kevin and Amy Landers singing baritone and tenor, didn’t hold back as they lifted our spirits and messaged our souls with many familiar hymns and some new ones too!

Special thanks to “Inheritance” for sharing their God given gift of music with our little Sagola church, and special thanks to Jerry and Teresa Cram for providing the opportunity for tonight’s concert as well as the refreshments during our fellowship time.

Therefore, to welcome summer properly, we held our final June Bible Study out at the Reimer’s campfire pit, to open God’s Word out in His creation!

With the granted exception of the Flunker children making s’mores, we all enjoyed an engaging Bible Study addressing the topic of “generational sin” and our determination that by the power of the Spirit we might break the chain of disfunction and disobedience.

Special thanks to the Reimer’s for opening up their home, and we might just make their fire-pit our new home for the evening Bible Studies, so long as the skeeters stay chased away and the chickens stay in their coop!

See you all in August!

There was rumor of donuts for those of our youth who volunteered, and even though we didn’t get quite the turnout from the youth, it turns out adults like donuts too!

Special thanks to Mason Murray for all his hard work, and especially to Bob and Krista for their leadership. Thanks to all the volunteers who took an entire afternoon’s job and finished it in 30 minutes!

2nd Annual Grace Presbyterian Fishing Derby https://www.gracesagola.com/2018/06/09/2nd-annual-grace-presbyterian-fishing-derby/ Sun, 10 Jun 2018 03:40:41 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=3685 With beautiful sunshiny weather and calm waters, we held our 2nd annual Grace Presbyterian Fishing Derby today! We had a marvelous turnout, with a record number of kids catching fish! We are so grateful to everyone who came out to make it such a fun event.

Of the exciting sights were Angie Applekamp catching more fish than in her whole lifetime, a couple of kids falling in the water, the Clines perfecting their catch and release, Kris catching fish out of a bucket!, a few lures lost in the weeds, and chips and grilled hotdogs for everyone!

The Grand Champion this year was Cameron Schultz for 1st place with the winning crappie, and in a close 2nd was Bruce Reimer, and daughter Abby netting the most fish. Additionally, Micah Flunker came in 1st for the shore fisherman, with 3rd place overall for a 9.3/4″ largemouth bass.

Great big special thanks to Bob and CJ Kennard and the Channing Bait Shop for their generosity in preparing snacks and drinks for everyone as well as donating all the bait and many rods and reels for the challengers to use! Bob also deserves an extra special hand for helping to take countless fish off the hook for our little ones (and some big ones too)!!

Congratulations to everyone!

Small Group “Bahamian” Cook Out https://www.gracesagola.com/2018/06/07/small-group-bahamian-cook-out/ Fri, 08 Jun 2018 02:45:02 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=3639 We praise God for the strengthened relationship we’ve all enjoyed over this past year through our small groups.  To finish out the year with a celebration, we all met at Pastor’s house for an authentic Bahamian BBQ, with genuine recipes and culinary practices garnered from the Caribbean.

We had barbecued ribs (cooked over casuarina pine) and chicken thighs (made “chicken-in-a-bag” for those who know that reference), homemade coleslaw with Caribbean spices, “Spanish-Wells” macaroni and cheese, “Weinburger’s peas and rice, and “Billy Stubbs” carrot cake for dessert!  (and specially imported just for the ex-missionaries: VitaMalt!)

Along with the Bahamian “jams” going on in the back ground, we enjoyed a great night of fellowship and it was the first time that all of the various small groups got together in one place.  With our extended break through the summer, it was nice to have a final celebration of our Christian community together.  Now its on to soccer season, vacations, and fishing!

National Day of Prayer https://www.gracesagola.com/2018/05/03/national-day-of-prayer/ Fri, 04 May 2018 05:05:07 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=3459 Since 1952 our country has recognized the 1st Thursday in May as the National Day of Prayer. This day has great importance for our nation as a call to seek after God’s favor and guidance. It is our desire to come before Him in humility for the sake of those in authority, as the Apostle Paul writes, “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

The benefits and privileges of the freedom we share have been afforded to us at great cost. Yet, there are many in our world today who fail to recognize the call of God to “act justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). As we all can see the ever increasing challenges of our world, it makes this National Day of Prayer all the more urgent that believers gather to worship through prayer in seeking after the wisdom, love, and meekness of the Lord.

Today we say thank you to you our community, and we consider it a privilege to pray for God’s blessings and favor over the 1st responders, active and inactive members of our military, teachers, health care providers, police and fire departments, and our local, regional, and national governmental leaders.

May the face of the Lord shine upon you and bless you this day. Amen.

Easter Celebration https://www.gracesagola.com/2018/04/03/easter-celebration/ Tue, 03 Apr 2018 16:37:46 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=3364 This morning we celebrate our Lord’s resurrection from the dead! Even though Saturday was spent shoveling snow, our volunteers still made it out to church lead our kids in our Egg-stravaganza in preparing our sanctuary for our Easter service.

In contrast to Good Friday, with the altar stripped and cross draped in black, Easter morning was filled with balloons and an explosion of flowers. It is our church’s celebration – a “party service” with a special fellowship our following, and many songs! Our service included 6 readings that the congregation participated in, and a special Children’s presentation as the recounted the story and significance of Easter.

Congratulations to Steven Alexa (1st place) and Jana Underwood (runner up) for their award winning chili.  Now that the title has been conferred the challenge to keep those bragging rights begins!  Thanks again to all in our Sagola/Channing community for the fun, food and fellowship.

Children’s Building Dedication Ceremony https://www.gracesagola.com/2018/01/21/childrens-building-dedication-ceremony/ Mon, 22 Jan 2018 04:38:00 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=3239 Each Sunday we conclude our service with the chorus, “We are so blessed.” It must be emphasized that this song isn’t sung in any spirit of show-boating or pompous pride, but rather in humble recognition of God’s unmerited favor upon us.

This sentiment is was best summaries the celebration of our new addition to Grace: a dedicated Children’s classroom building. As we have watched our little church continue to grow, and now having received a beautiful area to train up the next generation – the only thought that encapsulates the fullness of all planning, cooperation, and construction is: “We are so blessed!”

We were honored to have Richard Wissell, Moderator for the General Assembly for the Mackinaw Presbytery come to congratulate and challenge us to keep walking by faith. We read Psalm 118 and united hands together in prayer, declaring as one: “God is good, His love endures forever.”

We give God the thanks, and look to Him by faith asking for His continued favor to help us shepherd our children, and make good use of the resources we have for their growth and His glory!

Ministry Leadership Team Meeting/Luncheon https://www.gracesagola.com/2018/01/20/ministry-leadership-team-meeting-luncheon/ Sun, 21 Jan 2018 04:36:06 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=3210 This past Saturday we held our annual Ministry Leadership Team Meeting, for anyone in our church who serves to help lead others in the love of our Lord, from the most obvious roles to the most overlooked.

Together we looked to God’s word to answer these core questions:

  • What is church?
  • Whose church?
  • What’s my role?

We focused our instruction on a few key points:

  1. Christian leadership shapes worship
  2. Character is more important than gifting
  3. An essential attribute of a leader is vision
  4. Leaders foster unity, humility, and service

Our new 2018 church theme is “Growing:Together”

We concluded with table discussions working to answer these 3 questions:

  • How is your ministry a conduit for worship?
  • What is your vision for your ministry?
  • What is the “character” of our church you want visitors to see?

We were so blessed today to listen and watch our Grace kids reenact that special moment with beautiful narration and interaction in their roles. We’d like to offer on behalf of the whole church a great big thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the pageant a success.

We are proud to report that through the generosity of our hungry congregants and skilled bakers we raised over $1,300! Special thanks to all those who stuck around after the Fellowship Hour to contribute and take another step closer to paying down the addition.

With original plans to host the event in Channing, the weather decided not to cooperate and last minute changes placed the event back in Sagola at the old Township Hall. And it was a good thing too, because the weather was entirely unpredictable with sleet and light flurries with temperatures right at freezing. Some might say perfect for a Yooper-Halloween, but quite chilly for the little princesses and ninjas.

The Channing Beautification Committee and Township did an amazing job at handling the last minute location changes, and they put on a fantastic event with free food, concessions, giveaways, raffles, prizes, games, live music and more! Special thanks to all those who participated in the festivities to help make our community a fun, safe, and enjoyable place to live!

With a few members of Grace in attendance, the gathering of believers was witnessing the rededication and appropriation of baptism for these who have all accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ and salvation by grace through faith. It was a powerful moment of publicly demonstrating obedience to Jesus’ command, and giving testimony to the goodness of God in their lives.

With invitations going out around the UP, we had a great turnout, and almost surpassed our attendance record, even needing to put up extra chairs into our fellowship hall. Our bikers came dressed for their ride in their leathers, and Pastor Ryan, donning his borrowed biker gear, centered his sermon around the Faith of the Community.

Following our worship service, we had one of the BEST brunches, provided as always from our beloved volunteers. With every kind of sausage, 3 different egg-bakes, and your choice of pancakes, french toast, and even cinnamon french toast – it was more than enough for those bikers to make their annual trip up the through the UP on the traditional Dave Anderson Memorial Ride.

We would like to extend our gratitude to all those bikers who blessed us with their presence this Sunday, and cordially invite them back again anytime they’re riding through!

Our favorite song from the half-dozen the kids learned was “How Far Love Goes,” and we’ve even since incorporated it into our worship set. We would like to extend a great big “THANK YOU” to all our wonderful volunteers who helped to create such a memorable week for our children.

Special thanks to Bob and CJ Kennard for their indispensable help in the planning and execution of the event, as well as providing donations, food, and prizes to all the participants.

We stopped counting after 50 fish were caught with some individuals catching more than a dozen in the course of our 3 hour tournament.  But when the final minute struck, whatever was on the stringer was on the stringer!  At the end it came down to a matter of millimeters to determine a winner.

The Grace Presbyterian Fishing Derby Champion is going to be announced at this month’s Community Meal, where we’ll be serving a “Fish Fry!”  Come on over for some good food and fellowship and to congratulate this year’s Champion!

Community Meal is Wednesday July 26th at 5:30pm at Sagola Community Center

We are so blessed to have 20 of our church family to commit or rededicate their lives to God as symbolized in baptism.

“In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.” – Colossians 2:11-12

Maundy Thursday Seder Celebration https://www.gracesagola.com/2017/04/13/maundy-thursday-seder-celebration/ Thu, 13 Apr 2017 03:39:55 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=2479 Tonight we celebrated a Christian Passover Seder Celebration at Grace Presbyterian. Rather than a formal service, we held the celebration in our fellowship hall, and separated our tables to create an inviting family environment.

One unique feature about the meal was how each table was represented by a “father” figure to lead their table in the meal, with additional participation by a server, candle lighter, scripture reader, and child to recite the questions of the Haggadah.

With some amazing volunteers, amazing food, beautiful solos, creative decorations, and a togetherness that welcomes one another to the table, we enjoyed a splendid time of fellowship and remembrance this Maundy Thursday.

It is our desire to unite together as we enter into Good Friday, with participation and remembrance of Jesus leading His disciples from the Upper Room into Gethsemane.

Our group made 230 pizzas in 2 hours and all money raised will be going to the Children’s Church project. Our theme this year was “Candy is sweet but God’s Love is even sweeter.” We learned that twizzlers are tied in knots just like when we worry but when we put our trust in the Lord he takes away our worries.- Matthew 6 25-35. We also covered mints, tootsie pops, and milk duds. We learned that no matter what, God knows us and gives us what we need. The night was technology free so no cellphones, ipods, etc. We made it all night without 1 complaint. What a great night of games, karaoke , and fellowship! The kids did an amazing job and each year I am reminded how the Lord has blessed us with such respectful, wonderful kids. A big thank you to our church family and friends for their support in this event! God’s love is certainly Sweet!!

This was not a fundraiser, it was a service project put together by our children’s church volunteers to serve the congregation with a very special Valentine’s Day dinner.

The kids each had their role from preparing salads and washing dishes, to serving tables and greeting and seating. It was both adorable and charming to sit and have our little ones wait on us and serve us.

There’s no doubt among those who attended that it was a smashing hit and everyone who was kept home due to weather missed out on a fantastic event – one which will surely be repeated annually, so long as we have appetites for yummy food made by precious hands!

The Mansfield Pioneer Church Christmas Service https://www.gracesagola.com/2016/12/15/the-mansfield-pioneer-church-christmas-service/ Thu, 15 Dec 2016 04:17:49 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=2231 This week was the biannual Mansfield Church service, and as December would dictate it was filled Christmas celebration and carols.  The church itself was built with simplicity of worship in mind, and rather than install modern electrical conveniences, the members of the historical society opted for the more rustic and tradition lantern lit setting, as was in the Christmases of yesteryear.  The facility is heated by a barrel stove and music fills the hall with a traditional pump organ.

The setting was completed, along with joyful choir members praising God, with the lighting of the Christmas tree with actual candles.  Yes, that’s correct, candles with fire on a real balsam tree.

The service was record setting with no seats available and the isles filled with jolly church men and women sitting on the floor.  Pastor Ryan brought the service’s prayers and sermon both reminding and encouraging the congregation to “Wait on Jesus” this Christmas season by remaining “watchful” and “devout” just as Simeon and Anna as recorded in Luke’s Gospel.

As word continues to spread of this warm rustic church, we are proud to have our church members participate in the joyful celebration of welcoming Jesus this Christmas as they did in the day of yore.

The short service was attended by many who have lost loved ones this past year, but mostly by those whose lives have been touched by Chaps, who served at the Hospital for over 25 years.  Pastor Dave’s son Seth gave remarks highlighting the special gift Dave had to bring both a atuned sensitivity and lighthearted jovial spirit to all those he ministered to in the hospital.

We are forever grateful that God gave us Pastor Dave Anderson to lead our church and serve as the example of a Christ-follower to all those in the Northwoods of Michigan and Wisconsin, and we are proud that His legacy will live on in memoriam through the Hospital’s generosity and recognition of His service.

Fall Harvest Festival https://www.gracesagola.com/2016/10/31/fall-harvest-festival/ Mon, 31 Oct 2016 00:51:03 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=2172 harvestfest16The Fall Harvest Festival was a fantastic hit. We had a record number of children and families come and both attend and volunteer. There were games and prizes with everything from beanbag toss to a doughnut on a string. The kids had bowling, shooting, painting pumpkins, coloring, and crafts, and so much more.

Eventually, once enough games had been played and prizes won, we had our community prayer and dinner was served. Special thanks to everyone who contributed and helped serve from to the grilling to the desserts.

After dinner, the kids got their costumes finalized and lined up for “Trunk-or-Treat” where all the cars line up and the kids go from car to car collecting as much Halloween candy as possible.

It was such a fun night, and we want to thank everyone who helped make it a success.

Bake Sale Fundraiser Successful https://www.gracesagola.com/2016/10/02/bake-sale-fundraiser-successful/ Sun, 02 Oct 2016 15:51:31 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=2107 b_barIn a cooperative effort to show our love and appreciation for our beloved Pastor Dave Anderson, the church at Grace Presbyterian has decided to purchase an oak tree to plant in his memory.  For the funds to purchase the tree we held one of our famous Bake Sales.

Lasting over an hour, with the prices of pies and cookies going for above $50, the entire church worked together to raise more than $2,000.00!  This is the most ever raised at one of our bake sales!  At one point we even had two 8 year olds bidding against one another and finding the price was quickly escalating.

It was a wonderful hour after church to laugh and clap for the cooperative effort of buying goodies.  Although we might need to all go on diets afterwards, we are excited to see how God’s has provided through the generosity of those who baked and those who bought to have what we need to offer a fitting memorial to Pastor Dave.

2nd Saturday https://www.gracesagola.com/2016/09/12/2nd-saturday/ Mon, 12 Sep 2016 03:25:57 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=1982 2ndsat2nd Saturday is a joint ministry with local church youth groups and Alex’s Place Coffee House. The hope is a monthly gathering of young Christians to worship, learn, and fellowship together.

This past week we kicked off our youth group’s meeting with worship and teaching from Pastor Ryan. The challenge was to learn how to give God control of your life and not rely on your own plans.

Special thanks to Pastors Lee and Lori and those who brought chips, hot dogs, and drinks.

See you again in October!

Annual Church Picnic https://www.gracesagola.com/2016/08/21/annual-church-picnic/ Sun, 21 Aug 2016 03:39:05 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=1922 01There’s one thing you cannot accuse a Grace Church member of, and that is not cooking enough food.  This year’s picnic was fantastic.  The weather man called for rain, but it was nothing but beautiful; not even a sprinkle until everything cleaned up and the cars were all but gone.

The service was short with a few praise songs, prayer, a homily, and opportunity for testimony.  The picnic consisted of over a dozen side dishes and a mountain of burgers, hot dogs, and brats.  There were even 2 whole tables of treats and desserts!

After lunch, the attention turned to fellowship and fun.  Outside the kids had “minute to win it” games, and even a piñata, and most of the grown ups watched or battled it out in feverish games of bean-bag toss.

Special thanks to everyone who contributed to the picnic and came out to make it a success!

Biker Sunday: August 7th Dave Anderson Tribute Ride https://www.gracesagola.com/2016/08/07/biker-sunday-august-7th-dave-anderson-tribute-ride/ Sun, 07 Aug 2016 03:37:48 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=1909 This year’s Biker Sunday is special for more than being the 10th annual Biker Sunday, as it has now been renamed the “Dave Anderson Tribute Ride” in honor of our former pastor.

04We had almost 20 bikers show up with their bikes growling. After joining the church family for worship in their leathers and bandanas, we had an incredible meal provided by the Carpenters. Following the fellowship, the Harleys were fired up and the caravan of bikers rode out for the annual ride, but this time in honor of their friend Dave.

Pastor Ryan challenged the church to “commit their way onto the Lord.” In the same manner that a Harley will carry the rider in whichever direction the front tire points, we too must learn to point our lives in the direction of the Savior.

We are grateful to God for beautiful weather for the annual ride, and we are thankful for the years of influence Pastor Dave has had. We intend on carrying on his tradition of opening our doors to the bikers as often as they will come to worship our Lord with us.

Remembering Pastor Dave Sept 16, 1947 – July 26, 2016 https://www.gracesagola.com/2016/07/26/remembering-pastor-dave/ Tue, 26 Jul 2016 03:13:46 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=1877 daveOn July 26th Dave Anderson went home to be with our Lord. After battling cancer for many years, he said he was at peace, and ready to finish the race having kept the faith and finished the fight.

Below are a few of the tributes and comments from Grace’s Facebook page. Thank you Pastor Dave. You will be forever missed on this side.

Today I heard that Pastor Dave passed away. Please say a prayer for Pastor Dave’s family today. He certainly meant allot to many of the people he touched over the years with his living through the word. I hadn’t known Dave nearly as long as many of the folks who will read this but he had a huge impact on me and my family. But he’s in a better place now and heaven certainly gained today.

Sad day for many today. The man touched alot of people in his career, including Kris and myself. He married us , baptized our grandchildren, and was always there when ever you needed him . He was the spiritual leader of our church family and a great friend. He was at my side within hours Of when I had my stroke. He will be missed by all. God bless you David and rest in peace.

02Although we did not attend Sunday church services on a regular basis, whenever we did go, pastor Dave and his wife Marie both made us feel welcome and a part of the church family. He will be missed by everyone. Prayers to the Anderson family.

Such sad news that we have lost a wonderful man. He and I shared many thoughts and prayer during both my bouts with cancer and his too. As I wrote my book I had included Dave’s letters and notes and told of his encouragement and prayers. He always had a scripture quote that was so appropriate for that moment. We would share our favorites. After I was in remission we would share our thoughts and prayers when we would meet. Dave will be missed by all but we can find comfort knowing he is with God in paradise. My prayers have always been offered for him and his whole family, and they will continue.

I was blessed to work with “Chaps” for 6 years at DCH. He was a godly man with a great sense of humor and love for his fellow man. He will be greatly missed here on earth, but is rejoicing in heaven with Jesus! Prayers for his family at their loss.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants.
Psalm 116:15

Prayers for Chaps – Tribute Fundraiser: June 12th https://www.gracesagola.com/2016/06/12/prayers-for-chaps/ Sun, 12 Jun 2016 02:50:03 +0000 http://www.gracesagola.com/?p=1848 13Grace Church and the community surrounding North Dickinson County held a fund raising event at the Sagola Community Center in honor of Pastor Dave Anderson. Dave has been battling cancer for many years and has recently announced his retirement as Senior Pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church.

The Tribute Event was fantastically attended with and estimated 2,000 people attending, and raising close to $50,000 for the fundraiser.

Although the comfy anti-gravity chairs were put out in the shade for Dave and Marie, there was no keeping Dave in his seat. Despite the difficulty, Dave is such a people person and greeted with hugs almost each and every person who came to support him.

Serving for years as the chaplain at the Hospital, and as the Pastor of Grace, Dave has touched so very many lives. We salute you brother Dave and wish you the very best as you continue to fight. We stand beside you as your community and family, and hope that you feel all our love.
